Toledo Walleye News Release

(Kalamazoo, MI)- The Toledo Walleye scored three third period goals to tie and then beat Kalamazoo in overtime 5-4 tonight. Toledo will host Kalamazoo in the final preseason game Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.

The Wings raced out to a 3-0 lead after one period. Toledo started to chip away at the lead with a goal by Travis Novak at 18:59 of the second period with Jake Trask and Jordy Christian assisting.

"It was a good effort by the team tonight," said Assistant Coach Dan Watson. "We got down by a few goals early, but never quit. As a staff all we can ask is that they compete and battle for sixty minutes. The game was sloppy at stages but that's to be expected with players not knowing each that well."

An early Kalamazoo goal put the Walleye behind 4-1 in the third period. The comeback would begin with a power play goal from defenseman Cody Lampl at 6:50. Defenseman Dale Warkentin would make it a one goal game (Phil Oreskovic and Jordy Christian) at 15:52 of the third. The comeback was complete at 16:54 when Doug Clarkson scored to tie the game from Dale Warkentin. Nikita Poliakov, a member of this year's Walleye Free Agent Camp, scored the overtime game winner at 1:56. It was an unassisted power play goal.

Walleye Notes: Goaltender Matt Anthony started the game and made 26 saves on 30 shots. Toledo finished the game with two power play goals in nine chances. The Toledo Walleye will open the 2012-13 regular season on Saturday, October 13th at home against the Division Rival Kalamazoo Wings. 2012-13 Season tickets are on sale now online at www.toledowalleye.com, or by phone at (419) 725-9255.
