Gladiators Open Preseason with 4-2 Win

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Marietta, G.A. native Doug Jones scored two goals, and Phoenix Coyotes goaltending prospect Louis Domingue stopped 28 of 29 shots as the Gwinnett Gladiators topped division rival Greenville 4-2 Friday night at the BI-LO Center to start the preseason.

The Gladiators final preseason game is Sunday, October 7th at 4:00 p.m. at the Ice Forum in Duluth against the South Carolina Stingrays.

Jones opened the scoring with the lone tally of the first period at 13:26, as he snapped a quick shot from the slot over the glove hand of a stunned Adam Courchaine. Kyle Lawson and Casey Pierro-Zabotel picked up the assists, and despite being outshot 17-6 in the first Gwinnett carried the lead into the intermission thanks to stellar goaltending from Domingue.

Brandon Wong tied the game late in the second period, but the Gladiators immediately answered. Just nine seconds after Wong's marker former Road Warrior forward Kale Kerbashian followed up on a scoring chance and stuffed home the rebound for an unassisted goal at 17:43.

Leading 2-1 in the third, Glads defenseman Dallas Jackson blasted a slapper through traffic and past Courchaine for a 3-1 lead at 4:16. Lawson and Pierro-Zabotel added their second assists of the night setting up Jackson.

Jones iced the game sliding his second goal of the game into an empty net with just 23 seconds left in regulation. Kevin Noble tacked on a tally as time expired for Greenville putting the final score at 4-2. Greenville outshot Gwinnett 30-26, but were limited to 13 shots in the final two periods after racking up 17 in the opening 20 minutes.

Emergency backup goalie Greg Ozubko played the final shift of the game, stopping one shot before the rebound was put in.
