Myers Leads Offense Again, But Spikes Fall to Muckdogs, 4-3

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Wood Myers delivered his second consecutive multi-hit game, and his fourth of the season, but another State College Spikes comeback attempt was turned aside in a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Trailing 4-1 going into the ninth, the Spikes (3-9) got a bunt single from Andres Luna and a base hit from Delvin Perez to start the stanza. After back-to-back strikeouts, Edwin Figuera doubled in two runs to draw State College within one. However, Figuera ended up stranded at third when Jeremy Ovalle (1) picked up his third strikeout of the inning to end the game.

Myers propelled the Spikes to their first run when he doubled to the gap in right-center field in the second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on Andres Luna's infield single. The designated hitter then added a bunt single of his own in the sixth.

Batavia (6-5) took the lead in the fourth when Sean Reynolds tripled in Jerar Encarnacion for his sixth RBI of the series and scored on J.D. Osborne's sacrifice fly to right.

The Muckdogs added two runs on a bases-loaded, two-out single by Demetritus Sims in the eighth.

State College starter Winston Nicacio (0-2) took the loss despite delivering a quality start. Nicacio allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over six-plus innings. The right-hander also recorded six strikeouts.

Muckdogs starter Alberto Guerrero (2-0) earned the win with six innings of one-run ball. Guerrero gave up four hits and three walks while striking out five batters.

Ovalle notched the save despite allowing two runs on three hits for Batavia.

Sims went 3-for-4 on the night to help pace the Muckdogs' offense.

The Spikes will now enjoy an off day in the New York-Penn League schedule on Wednesday before hitting the road on Thursday for the first game of a three-game set with the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies).

State College is set to send right-hander Angel Rondon (0-1) to the mound for the 7:05 p.m. game at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field, as they attempt to halt a six-game losing streak. Wiliamsport is scheduled to go with left-hander Jhordany Mezquita (0-0).

Follwing Thursday's game, the Spikes and Crosscutters will head back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday for a 7:05 p.m. game. Fans of all ages will enjoy a fantastic post-game FIREWORKS show, presented by Fullington Bus Company, that will light up the skies over Happy Valley.

The fun begins when gates open to the public at 6 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans of all ages receive a Travel Mug Giveaway.

It's also the first 4 for $44 Friday of the year, presented by MAJIC 99. Fans can get four of the ballpark's best seats, four hot dogs and four small sodas for just $44, an $85 value.

Fans of age can sample the Yuengling Happy Hour, with half-price Yuengling and Yuengling Light drafts available from 6-8 p.m.

After the game, kids 12 and under can also run the bases.
