Muckdogs Game Notes

June 26, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Batavia Muckdogs News Release

Today's Game- The Muckdogs go for their first series sweep of the season today against the State College Spikes. Batavia won the first game of the series by 8-6, and then won last night by a 4-3 final. Batavia clinched their first series win of the season with the win yesterday. The Muckdogs return home tomorrow for an off day before playing Auburn in a three game series.

That was yesterday- No runs would cross the plate last night until the eighth inning. Logan Boyd did not give up a run in his five innings of work. Only two hits came off of the Spikes' bats throught the first five. Michael Donadio came up clutch for Batavia with two runners in scoring position. While the infield was playing in, he snuck it through the right side for the first runs of the game. Sean Reynolds and Albert Guaimaro both drove in runs as well to put Batavia in front 4-0, and they would hold on for the 4-3 win.

Offense Overload- In seven of the first ten games, Batavia has managed to score at least six runs in each of those contests. Batavia has one of the top scorers in the league, with Jerar Encarnacion sitting in first place with eleven runs scored.

Exploding Encarnacion- Jerar Encarnacion has been on a tear to start off the season. On his current nine game hit streak to open the year, he's hitting .500. He leads the league in hits (20), RBI (10), he's second in extra base hits (6) and sits atop the league with his .500 average, and his .524 OBP. He also has the most defensive assists by any outfielder in the league with three, all coming on June 19th against West Virginia.

Beginning from behind- The Muckdogs have had trouble with giving up early leads in ballgames. Batavia has trailed after the fifth inning on seven different occasions so far this season, and have gone 2-5 in those contests.

Same Skipper- Calling the shots this season will be second year manager Mike Jacobs. Jacobs spent seven years in the bigs with Mets, Marlins, Royals, and the Diamondbacks. He clubbed 100 HR's in his MLB career, 32 of which came in 2008 with the Florida Marlins. He also tacked on 93 RBI's that year. His first year as a manager in Batavia saw the team go 30-45.

Some Superlatives- This year's players come in all shapes and sizes. The tallest being Sean Reynolds who towers at 6'7". The shortest five check in at 5'11". The youngest Muckdog is Dakota Bennett who is currently 18, and the oldest on the roster is Logan Boyd who is 24.

Spikes sticking around- Batavia will have three more series against the Spikes after this one in State College. The next meeting occurs July 7-9 back at Dwyer Stadium.

Recent Roster Action- RHP Osman Gutierrez was released, OF Ricardo Cespedes was called up to Greensboro, and RHP Jameson McGrane was assigned to Batavia

Marlins Update- Former Muckdog Brian Anderson drove in two of the nine runs that Miami would score in their 9-5 win over Arizona. Anderson, Starlin Castro and Miguel Rojas also chipped in two hits apiece.
