5-Run Inning Helps Vermont Snap 5-Game Losing Streak With 9-3 Win

ABERDEEN, MD - The Vermont Lake Monsters used a five-run third inning to help snap a five-game losing streak with a 9-3 victory in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at Ripken Stadium in the final game of a six-game roadtrip.

Vermont jumped out to a quick lead with two runs in the top of the first inning, including a Jameson Hannah RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The Lake Monsters got another run in the inning when Hannah scored from second on a fielding error by shortstop Adam Hall.

The Lake Monsters sent 10 batters to the plate in the third to score the five runs on just three hits as Aberdeen starter Hector Guance (1-2) issued four walks in the inning. Marcos Brito led off the frame with a double and scored on a passed ball, while Vermont also scored on a bases loaded walk and on a balk before Noah Vaughan capped off the scoring with a two-run double for a 7-0 Lake Monsters lead.

Vermont's Chase Cohen (Oakland's ninth-round pick out of Georgia Southern) made his first professional start, allowing one hit with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings. Brady Feigl (fifth-round out of Ole Miss) followed with two hitless innings with one walk and three strikeouts to earn his first professional win.

Jose Mora came on in relief to start the bottom of the fifth and promptly loaded the bases with a single, walk and single. He almost worked out of the jam as he struckout the next two batters, but then uncorked a run-scoring wild pitch before another strikeout to end the inning with Vermont ahead 7-1.

The Lake Monsters added two more runs in eighth as they opened inning with three straight singles from Alfonso Rivas, Devin Foyle and Jeremy Eierman (RBI single) before a Marcos Brito two-out RBI single gave Vermont a 9-1 advantage.

Aberdeen scored two runs in bottom of eighth off Mora, who allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts over three innings. After a leadoff walk in the eighth, Chris Kohler came on in relief of Mora to retire the final five batters of the game including an eighth inning-ending double play.

Squier went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Rivas and Max Schuemann both had two of the Lake Monsters 11 hits on the night, while Hannah and Foyle both scored two runs.

Vermont returns to action on Thursday night as they open a six-game homestand at Centennial Field against the Brooklyn Cyclones at 7:05 pm. First 750 fans will receive a free Lake Monsters Baseball Cap, while it is also the first "Kids Eat Free" Thursday of the season.
