Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Hudson Valley starter Easton McGee fired six innings of one-run ball, and the hitters pounded out five extra-base hits in a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Tigers Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium. The win was the Renegades' seventh in a row as they swept their opening homestand 6-0. Hudson Valley outscored Connecticut 24-3 over the three-game series and have outscored their opponents 35-3 over the last four games.
Hudson Valley got on the board by plating two runs in the third inning. Centerfielder Jake Stone led off the frame with a double to left, then moved to third on a groundout. He would score when Tigers starting pitcher Wilkil Hernandez uncorked a wild pitch. Later in the inning, the Renegades got a runner to second with one out when shortstop Tyler Frank roped a triple to left-centerfield to give Hudson Valley a 2-0 lead.
The Renegades scored two more in the fourth thanks to one of the most exciting plays in baseball. With a runner at third and two out, centerfielder Jake Stone lifted a deep flyball into the leftfield corner. Tigers leftfielder Teddy Hoffman crashed into the wall going for the catch and the ball trickled towards left-centerfield. Stone came all the way around the bases for a two-run inside-the-park homerun to give Hudson Valley a 4-0 lead.
Leftfielder Bryce Brown used his speed to provide some insurance in the fifth. Connecticut relief pitcher Mitchell Stalsburg tried to pick off Brown at first, however his throw was wild and went down the rightfield line. Brown was able to score from first on the play and put the Renegades up 5-0.
Connecticut was finally able to get on the board in the sixth inning, and it was done almost singlehandedly from Luke Sherley. The shortstop led off with an infield single to short and moved to second on the play due to a throwing error from Frank. Sherley followed that by stealing third, and the throw from catcher Chris Betts went into leftfield allowing Sherley to score.
The Tigers had a chance to get back in the game when they loaded the bases with no one out in the seventh. However, Renegades reliever Joe Ryan struck out the next three hitters he faced to end the inning and preserve Hudson Valley's 5-1 lead.
The Renegades scored one more run in the seventh as an RBI double from Frank scored Brown from second to make the final 6-1.
Hudson Valley registered only six hits, but five of them were for extra bases. Frank went 2-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI, while Stone went 2-3 with his inside-the-park homer, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Brown did not register an at-bat as he walked three times, but he stole three bases and scored three times. Connecticut was held to three singles for the game.
McGee (2-0) got the win after allowing only one hit and striking out five in his six innings of work. The loss went to Hernandez (0-2) who allowed four earned runs on four hits in four innings of work.
The Renegades will get the day off tomorrow before embarking on a seven-game road trip Thursday when they open a three-game series against the Tri-City ValleyCats. First-pitch is scheduled for 7:00p.m. Right-hander Paul Campbell (1-0, 1.74 ERA) will take the hill for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Bryan Abreu (2-0, 1.13 ERA) for the Tigers.
Hudson Valley returns home Thursday, July 5th when they open a two-game series and homestand against the Staten Island Yankees. First-pitch is slated for 7:05 and fireworks will follow the game. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
