Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Detroit Tigers catching prospect Sam McMillan lined an RBI single to center field during the ninth inning to spoil a shutout but the Connecticut Tigers (2-9) suffered a franchise-record ninth straight loss, 11-1, in an offensive onslaught by the Hudson Valley Renegades (8-3) on Monday night.

The 2018 Tigers surpassed the previous franchise high of eight losses in a row from July 21-28, 2016. The Connecticut Tigers franchise dates back to 2010 when the Oneonta Tigers moved to Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

Tigers starting pitcher Carson Lance (Loss, 1-1) recorded six strikeouts, one short of his career high, but allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings. Jhonny Mateo relieved him and allowed an RBI single on his first pitch in the fifth. Victor Mueses tossed the final 1 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs including a bases-loaded walk.

Hudson Valley plated runs in six of its eight innings at the plate. Two Renegades reached base five times as cleanup hitter Chris Betts went 3-for-3 with two runs, two runs batted in, and two walks while third baseman Adrian Rondon went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and also reached base on a fielder's choice. Marvin Malone drove in three runs with a triple and a homer.

Trailing 11-0, Isrrael De La Cruz singled to lead off the ninth. Two batters later, McMillan singled on a line drive to center and scored De La Cruz from third base. McMillan recorded his first multi-hit game with Connecticut by going 2-for-4 at the plate. The 19-year-old is now batting .172 after eight games.

Following 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, Jesus Ortiz (Win, 1-0) became the ninth opposing pitcher to record his first decision and win of the season against Connecticut. Tigers third baseman Cam Warner finished 0-for-4 at the plate on Monday to snap his team-best hit streak at seven games.

The series concludes Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with Connecticut right-handed starter Wilkel Hernandez (0-1, 5.40) going to the mound against Renegades righty Paul Campbell (1-0, 1.74). Following the series finale at Hudson Valley on Tuesday and a league-wide off day Wednesday, the Tigers return home to Dodd Stadium for a three-game homestand against the Staten Island Yankees featuring Throwback Thursday, Fireworks Friday, and a CT Tigers Phone Grip giveaway on Saturday.

The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut. Individual tickets for all 2018 home games, season memberships to "The Club," ticket mini-plans, and Tigers team merchandise are now on sale at Dodd Stadium, over the phone at 860-887-7962, and online at CTTigers.com.
