Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - In his second start with a Detroit Tigers affiliate, right-handed pitching prospect Wilkel Hernandez struck out four of the first six batters he faced but the Hudson Valley Renegades (9-3) handed the Connecticut Tigers (2-10) their tenth loss in a row, 6-1, on Tuesday night at Duchess Stadium.
Hernandez ran into trouble in the third. Jake Stone led off with a double and later scored on a Hernandez wild pitch. Tyler Frank followed with an RBI triple to make it 2-0 Renegades.
In the fourth, Hernandez retired the first two batters before allowing a two-out triple by Justin Bridgman. He scored moments later when Stone pounded a fly ball off the wall in left and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to sink the Tigers into a 4-0 deficit.
Following his Connecticut debut with six strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings on June 21, Hernandez departed after four innings on Tuesday with five strikeouts and four earned runs.
Mitchell Stalsberg relieved Hernandez in the fifth and following a walk to Bryce Brown, appeared to have him picked off between first and second base, but Stalsberg's throw sailed down the right field line, allowing Brown to score from first on the error.
Hudson Valley starter Easton McGee (Win, 2-0) carried a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings but Tigers shortstop Luke Sherley, batting in his Connecticut debut, broke up the no-no with an infield single to the shortstop and moved to second on a throwing error. Sherley scored the lone run of the game by stealing third and forcing a throw by catcher Chris Betts that skidded all the way down the left field line.
Trailing 5-1, the Tigers loaded the bases in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate three times but Renegades reliever Joe Ryan struck out all three to escape the jam.
2018 Detroit Tigers 36th-round draft pick Yaya Chentouf made his professional debut in the seventh and allowed a two-out RBI double to Frank, who finished with two extra-base hits and two runs batted in.
The three-game sweep at Hudson Valley dropped the Tigers to 0-6 on the road this season and extended their franchise-record losing streak to 10 games.
Following a league-wide off day on Wednesday, the Tigers return home to Dodd Stadium for a three-game homestand against the Staten Island Yankees featuring Throwback Thursday, Fireworks Friday, and a CT Tigers Phone Grip giveaway on Saturday.
