Billings Mustangs News Release
GREAT FALLS, Mont. -- The Billings Mustangs (5-1, 20-24) completed a three-game series sweep of the Great Falls Voyagers (3-3, 18-25) with a 3-1 win on Wednesday night in front of 1,008 at Centene Stadium.
Great Falls totaled six hits over their first two innings, including four singles in the bottom of the first, to score their first and only run of the game. Lency Delgado singled to score Luis Curbelo and give the Voyagers an early 1-0 lead.
That lead held until Ramon Pineda (2-1) had trouble finding the strike zone out of the Voyagers' bullpen. The righty allowed the first four batters he saw in the top of the sixth to reach, walking two and hitting two. With the bases loaded and one out, Jonathan Willems singled to center to score James Free and Eric Yang and give the Mustangs their first lead of the night at 2-1.
That lead was extended in the eighth when Willems singled in another run. The second baseman finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Billings got shutout work from their bullpen for the 10th time this season, seeing Alec Byrd, Manuel Cachutt and Jake Stevenson combined for 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief. Stevenson struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season in five opportunities. It was the same day that Stevenson, along with Eric Yang and Miguel Medrano, would be named 2019 Pioneer League All-Stars.
It was the first three-game series sweep of the season for Billings, extending their lead in the division to two games. It also matched their longest overall winning streak of the year at four games.
The Mustangs now head to Idaho Falls to begin a three-game series against the Chukars. First pitch on Thursday, Aug. 1, is set for 7:15 p.m. MDT at Melaleuca Field.
