Great Falls Voyagers News Release
Great Falls, MT - The Pioneer League of Professional Baseball has announced its roster for the 5th annual PBL vs. NWL (Northwest League) All-Star Game to be played Tuesday, August 6th at Memorial Stadium in Boise, ID.
Players from each of the eight PBL teams comprise the 28-man roster. The roster features three players from Great Falls. First-baseman Harvin Mendoza was named to the squad in his first Pioneer League season. LHP and starter Avery Weems was chosen in his first professional season. And, RHP Ramon Pineda was selected as a reliever in his debut season with the Voyagers.
Harvin Mendoza is in his first season with Great Falls and fourth as a professional. The 20-year-old hails from Caracas, Venezuela, and signed with the Chicago White Sox as an international free-agent back in 2015. Mendoza currently leads the team in batting at .321 and is tied for the team lead in home runs with five. Mendoza ranks in the top 10 in the Pioneer League in on-base percentage, slugging, and on-base plus slugging.
Avery Weems is in his first season with Great Falls after making his professional debut for the AZL White Sox earlier this season. Weems was drafted by Chicago in the 6th round out of the University of Arizona. The Flagstaff, AZ native is 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA in four starts for the Voyagers. Weems has struck out 32 with just four walks in 21.1 innings pitched. Between the AZL and Great Falls, Weems is a combined 3-2 with a 1.31 ERA in eight starts.
Ramon Pineda is in his first season with the Voyagers and his third as a pro. Pineda signed with the White Sox back in 2016 out of Yaguate, Dominican Republic. The 21-year-old began his career in the Dominican Summer League in 2017, and pitched in the AZL in 2018. Pineda is 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 12 relief appearances for Great Falls this season. He has struck out 16 and walked four in 17.2 innings pitched. Opponents are batting just .175 against him. Pineda's older brother is current Minnesota Twins' starting pitcher Michael Pineda.
Great Falls hits the road for a three-game series this week at Missoula Thursday through Saturday before the all-star break begins on Sunday. Great Falls returns home following the break to start an eight-game home stand August 8th against Grand Junction and Rocky Mountain.
