Murphy extends hitting streak in loss

Aberdeen, MD- After taking a 1-0 lead early in the game, the Aberdeen IronBirds allowed nine unanswered runs and fell 9-1 to the Vermont Lake Monsters.

The IronBirds took an early lead in the bottom of third inning for the second consecutive night, as Hector Veloz drew a bases loaded walk which allowed Austin Anderson to score. The IronBirds took a 1-0 lead.

IronBirds RHP Lucas Long took the mound for his second start in an IronBirds uniform this season. Long went four complete innings, allowing four hits, three runs (all earned) and struck out one. The Minnesota native had a strong performance in his first three innings of work as he allowed just one hit and two other Vermont hitters to reach base.

The Lake Monsters' struck back in the top of the fourth inning however, as Jose Brizuela and John Nogowski collected back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After a Max Kuhn walk to load the bases, second baseman Trent Gilbert lined a single past IronBirds second baseman Steve Wilkerson, which scored Brizuela and Nogowski. The score was 2-1. Max Kuhn scored off an Gabriel Santana single making it a 3-1 Lake Monsters' lead.

Aberdeen put up a threat in the bottom of the seventh inning as the IronBirds loaded the bases. Tad Gold lead the inning off with a walk, Austin Anderson singled and Alex Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. The IronBirds could not push a run across however, as Riley Palmer and Hector Veloz struck out. The score remained 3-1.

Vermont erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth inning and would not look back. The Lake Monsters' collected four hits, a walk and two home runs in the inning. Max Kuhn had a solo home run, his fourth of the season and Jose Brizuela had a two-run home run, which was also his fourth of the season. Following the explosive inning, Vermont lead 9-1.

Alex Murphy extended his hitting streak to nine games Thursday night. In his first at-bat, Murphy smashed a ground ball back up the middle off of Vermont's RHP Corey Miller. Murphy's active nine game hit-streak ties a personal season high. His previous hitting streak took place from June 17th to June 26th. Austin Anderson currently holds the IronBirds longest hitting streak of the season after reaching base in 10 consecutive games from July 7th to July 17th.

Dominique Vattuone earned the win for Vermont, while Lucas Long suffered the loss.

The IronBirds will try to take the final game of the series tomorrow against Vermont. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
