State College Spikes News Release
LOWELL, MA - Brett Wiley's fourth-inning double knocked in both State College Spikes runs, but the Lowell Spinners came back to tie the game, then win it in the bottom of the ninth, 3-2, on Thursday night at Edward A. LeLacheur Park.
Despite the loss, the Spikes (33-20) are still nine games up on Batavia and Williamsport in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division. Losses by both teams on Thursday night also lowered State College's magic number to clinch a division title to 15.
Wiley, who returned to the Spikes on Monday, gave State College a 2-1 lead in the fourth with his two-out two-base hit. However, Lowell (24-28) tied the game when Deiner Lopez singled in a run in the sixth inning. Lopez, who scored the first Spinners run in the second on David Sopilka's double, then plated the winning run in the ninth when he brought in Mauricio Dubon with a single to center field.
State College starter Dewin Perez logged 5 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five batters. Josh Lucas then recorded the final out of the sixth inning by picking off Lopez at first. Lucas would go 2 1/3 innings of relief, yielding one walk while notching three strikeouts.
Joe Scanio (0-1) then pitched the ninth inning for the Spikes and took the loss, although the winning run was unearned as Dubon reached base on the only error of the game.
Luis Cruz also doubled to help the Spikes offense, which was out-hit on the night, 9-5.
Lowell reliever Chandler Shepherd (3-2) got the win with three scoreless innings. Shepherd gave up a leadoff single in the seventh, but retired the next nine batters he faced, two via strikeout.
Heri Quevedo started and went six innings on the hill for the Spinners. Quevedo allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four.
Friday, the Spikes and Spinners meet at LeLacheur Park for a 7:05 p.m. rubber match to finish their three-game series. State College will send left-hander Austin Gomber (0-2) to the mound, while Lowell will counter with right-hander Reed Reilly (0-1).
The Spikes will then visit the Connecticut Tigers (Detroit Tigers) for a three-game series starting on Saturday before returning home to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Tuesday, August 12. The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (Cleveland Indians) are set to come to State College for a three-game set.
