-SPIKES CONTINUE ROAD TRIP AGAINST LOWELL: The State College Spikes keep a six-game road trip against Stedler Division opponents going tonight with a matchup against the Lowell Spinners at Edward A. LeLacheur Park. The Spikes are in the midst of a three-game series at Lowell, and then they'll head to Norwich, CT for a three-game series against the Connecticut Tigers, co-NYPL Wild Card leaders, starting on Saturday. The Spikes lead the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division by nine games, while Lowell sits in third place in the Stedler, 12 1/2 games back of Tri-City, as well as staying 3 1/2 games back of the NYPL Wild Card. State College took two out of three from Lowell at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park last year. All-time, State College is 12-11 against Lowell and 4-7 in games played at LeLacheur Park.
-LAST GAME: Chase Raffield and Brian O'Keefe hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to spearhead the State College Spikes offense, and Will Anderson pitched seven quality innings on the mound as the Spikes snapped a four-game losing streak by shutting out the Lowell Spinners in a 7-0 win on Wednesday night at Edward A. LeLacheur Park.
Raffield led off the inning with his third homer of the year to right field, and O'Keefe followed with his second blast of the year off the top of the scoreboard in left field to extend the Spikes' lead to 3-0. Danny Diekroeger's sacrifice fly in the first inning had scored the game's first run, and the Stanford product followed with a two-out RBI double in the fourth as part of a multi-hit game.
Anderson scattered six hits over his seven innings, and recorded five strikeouts to earn a win for the fifth straight decision. The Cardinals' 2013 26th-round draft choice also yielded just his eighth walk in 53 2/3 innings on the season, and delivered his fifth start of six innings or more with three earned runs or less on the year.
Darren Seferina collected three of the 12 State College hits on the evening, while Robelys Reyes bolstered the Spikes' attack with two hits and a walk.
-SPIKES SEND SOUTHPAW PEREZ TO HILL: Left-hander Dewin Perez makes his team-leading tenth start of the year for the Spikes tonight. Last time out, Perez gave up two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a career-high eight batters over six innings of work for the win against Aberdeen in the nightcap of a doubleheader. The Cartagena, Colombia native has now faced 476 straight batters without allowing a home run, stretching back to his first pro appearance in 2012 for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals. Perez is 2-1 witha 2.66 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 20 1/3 innings in four road starts this season.
-SPINNERS TAP QUEVEDO FOR START: Right-hander Heri Quevedo makes his ninth start and 11th overall appearance with Lowell tonight. Quevedo held an ERA of 11.22 on July 10, but has improved it over his last four starts, all wins. The native Dominican tossed seven shutout innings at Staten Island last time out, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out six batters. Quevedo has allowed at least six runs in every start he has made at LeLacheur Park this year, and has struck out just four batters at home.
-FAMILIAR FACES RETURN TO SPIKES: The Spikes were bolstered by the return of two players on Monday as right-handed reliever Josh Lucas and infielder Brett Wiley returned to the fold. Lucas, who was 5-for-5 in save opportunities for the Spikes earlier this season, came back down from Single-A Peoria to aid the bullpen. Wiley, a key cog in the Spikes' 2013 playoff push, returns from the Suspended List after hitting .337 with two homers and 18 runs batted in over 25 games with the Spikes last year.
-SPIKE MARKS: Alex De Leon leads the NYPL in runs scored with 35, and his seven homers are tied for fourth in the league...Kyle Grana's 14.09 strikeouts per nine innings are second-most among NYPL relievers, and his 48 total whiffs are tied for fourth-most among all NYPL pitchers....Lucas's five saves for the Spikes are still tied for fifth in the NYPL...Lowell's Danny Mars is second behind now-former Spike Rowan Wick for the league's batting lead (.378 to .363)...The Spinners' Carlos Pinales leads the league with 12 saves in 13 chances...Brian O'Keefe was hit by two pitches last night, upping his league-leading total to 12, just eight back of Tyler Gaffney's club record set in 2012
