Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - Tied at two heading into the bottom of the ninth the Spinners needed some late inning magic to snap their four-game home losing streak and magic was what they got. Deiner Lopez's one-out single plated Mauricio Dubon to give Lowell a 3-2 walk-off win over the State College Spikes Thursday night at LeLacheur Park.
Lowell (24-28) threatened with two outs in the first. Jordan Betts singled to right and Mike Meyers followed with a single through the hole at short, but Aneudis Peralta flew out to end the inning.
The Spinners struck for a run in the second, again rallying with two outs. Lopez singled to left center and stole second base, coming around to score when David Sopilka's chopper stayed fair down the third base line for an RBI double.
State College (33-20) took the lead in the fourth, taking advantage of a gamble by Danny Mars that resulted in a two run double for Brett Wiley and a 2-1 Spikes lead.
The Spinners pulled even in the sixth inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk by Peralta. Dubon moved him up on a sacrifice bunt before a two-out single by Lopez brought Peralta home to even the score at two.
The score remained there until the bottom half of the ninth inning. Dubon reached on an error by Darren Seferina, taking second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Moore. Lopez then flared a single over the shortstop's head and Dubon raced home standing up, dislodging the ball with his foot, to score the winning run and give the Spinners a walk-off 3-2 win.
Lopez was the offensive catalyst for the Spinners Thursday night, picking up three hits and two RBI. Every other member of the Spinners line-up reached base at least once in the win.
Heri Quevedo was denied his fifth straight win, but pitched well through six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and a pair of walks, striking out four. Chandler Shepherd (3-2, 4.03) was the victor, allowing just one hit over three scoreless innings, striking out two.
The two teams conclude their three-game set Friday night on Daddy/Daughter Princess Night at LeLacheur Park. Elsa from Frozen will be on hand and a post-game fireworks show is scheduled. Reed Reilly (0-1, 5.87) gets the ball for the 7:05 first pitch.
