Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
ABERDEEN, MD --- The Vermont Lake Monsters won for the fifth time in their last six games as they scored three runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 led and then tacked on six runs in the eighth inning for a 9-1 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds in New York-Penn League action Thursday night at Ripken Stadium.
After Aberdeen had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded walk by Vermont starter Corey Miller, the Lake Monsters loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth on back-to-back leadoff singles from Jose Brizuela and John Nogowski followed by a Max Kuhn walk. Trent Gilbert then singled just under the glove of second baseman Stephen Wilkerson into rightfield to give Vermont a 2-1 lead. Jose Chavez, who threw out three baserunners attempting to steal and also picked another runner off first base, squeezed home Kuhn for Vermont's third run of the inning.
The game was still 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh when the Ironbirds loaded the bases with one out on two singles off Jordan Schwartz and a hit batter by Corey Walter, but Walter struckout Riley Palmer and Hector Veloz to get out of the jam and keep the Lake Monsters lead at two. It wouldn't stay at two for long as Kuhn led off the eighth inning with his fourth home run of the season and a 4-1 lead.
Vermont scored three more times in the eighth on a Chavez RBI single and a two-run throwing error before Brizuela capped off the six-run inning with a long two-run homer to rightfield. The home run was the fourth of the season for Brizuela, who was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the game. J.P. Sportman was 3-for-5 with a double as the Lake Monsters pounded out 11 hits. Yairo Munoz, who currently has a 17-game hitting streak, did not play on Thursday.
The Lake Monsters bullpen continued their recent dominance, allowing just four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts over six scoreless innings. Dominique Vattuone did not allow a hit in his two innings of relief (the fourth and fifth innings) to earn the win and also extended his personal scoreless streak to 14 1/3 innings over his last six appearances. Jonathan Massad struckout four over the final two innings and has retired 21 of the last 22 batters he has faced.
Ironbirds starter Lucas Long (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits over four innings to take the loss, while Nigel Nootbaar was charged with all six runs in the eighth inning. Austin Anderson was 2-for-4 with one run and Alex Murphy 2-for-3 with a double for Aberdeen (18-34), which has lost four of its last five games.
This is the second straight roadtrip in which Vermont (22-31) has won the first two games of the trip and the Lake Monsters will look for their first three-game series sweep of the season at Aberdeen on Friday beginning at 7:05 pm. Vermont will then head to Auburn for another three-game series before returning to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Tuesday.
