Lowell Spinners News Release

The Spinners look to even the series at one when Heri Quevedo goes for his fifth straight win for a 7:05 first pitch.

S P I N - N O T E S:

Home Blues: The Spinners continued to struggle at LeLacheur Park, starting their six-game homestand the same way the last ended, with a loss, falling to the State College Spikes, 7-0...The Spinners have now lost 7-of-9 at LeLacheur Park and watched their home record fall to 9-19, worst in the New York-Penn League, with the loss...The Spikes scored early and often, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings as the Spinners offense remained stuck in neutral, picking up just six hits in defeat.

Watch Yourself : The Spinners took exception to State College C Brian O ' Keefe, who perhaps admired his second inning home run a bit too much...In his next at-bat O ' Keefe was hit by a pitch from RHP Aaron Wilkerson and the two teams jawed at each other...In his sixth inning at-bat, O ' Keefe was struck again, this time by an offering from RHP Mario Alcantara, though appeared to be no ill intent.

Red Hot Mars: OF Danny Mars continued to toy with New York-Penn League pitching, recording his fifth straight multi-hit game and 15th multi-hit game of the season...Mars raised his average to .363 in the process, second best in the league behind OF Rowan Wick, who was promoted to Quad Cities from State College in mid-July...Mars is 30 points higher than the third place batter, 1B Sam Travis, who was promoted by the Red Sox to Low-A Greenville last week.

Figuring it Out: After an atrocious start to the season, RHP Heri Quevedo has been on quite a roll of late, recording wins in each of his last four outings ... .In the process Quevedo has lowered his ERA from 11.22, a high-water mark after allowing eight runs in 3.1 innings July 10 vs. Staten Island, to 7.69, after seven shutout innings against the same Yankees team July 31 at Staten Island...In that last start against the Yankees, Quevedo allowed just four hits while striking out six...Limiting hits has been the biggest issue for the right-hander, as entering July, batters were hitting .354 against Quevedo.

Wilkerson Struggles : After allowing just 10 hits over his first 18 innings, RHP Aaron Wilkerson struggled Wednesday night, allowing seven hits over four innings, charged with six runs, five earned, to pick up his first loss with the team...Wilkerson did strike out eight, but struggled with extra-base hits, as the Spikes has two doubles and back-to-back home runs to lead off the second inning.

Betts Slumping : 3B Jordan Betts has found himself in a funk of late, going just 6-for-32 over his last nine games (.188 average)...Betts has continued to hit for power, collecting his seventh home run and adding a pair of doubles as well...Betts leads the team in home runs and doubles (12) and ranks second in RBI (28)...He also leads the team in strikeouts (50), ranking in the Top 10 in the NYPL.

Alcantara Dances : After an up-and-down season where he showed promise in the Spinners ' rotation in 2013, RHP Mario Alcantara is searching for consistency out of the bullpen in 2014 after a mid-season demotion from Greenville...After entering his last outing with a 10-0 lead, Alcantara walked the bases loaded before allowing an RBI single and being removed from the game...Alcantara danced around trouble in three shutout innings Wednesday, allowing just one hit, but walking two and hitting a batter with help from four strikeouts.
