Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs won their most impressive game of the season Friday night, beating the Youngstown SteelHounds 7-2 at CenturyTel Center .
Leading by just 3-2 entering the third period, Bossier-Shreveport exploded for four goals in the final frame to win their sixth straight home contest and advance their record to 8-6-2. Youngstown falls to 13-3-1 in their most lopsided loss yet this year.
The SteelHounds actually lead 1-0 in the game after a Jason Baird powerplay goal in the first period, but the Mudbugs would take the lead for good shortly after. After Kevin Cooper set up a goal by Elias Godoy, the 'Bugs scored again just eight seconds later as Godoy set up Justin Aikins for a 2-1 Bossier-Shreveport lead.
In the second frame, Brett Smith's steal set up a Chris Brassard breakaway goal and extended the lead to 3-1. Youngstown would battle back though as Mark Johnson scored his first of the season on a feed from Chris Richards to get the 'Hounds back within one at 3-2 after two periods of play.
The Mudbugs offense took over the rest of the way. Bossier-Shreveport got some breathing room when Daniel Pegoraro and Joe Ori set up Tyrel Lucas in the slot for his sixth goal of the year to regain to two-goal cushion. Then Cooper carried the puck off the boards and snuck it past Brad Roberts just over the goal line to put the 'Bugs up 5-2 midway through the third. Later on, Brett Smith would set up two of his teammates on their first goals of the season. Smith set up Ryan Fairbarn on the powerplay and then fed Karlis Zirnis on a two-on-one as Bossier-Shreveport buried Youngstown 7-2. A goal and an assist in the game for Chris Brassard gave him 499 points in his ten-year professional hockey career.
Before Friday night, the Mudbugs had not scored more than four goals in any game this year and the 'Hounds had not surrendered more than four. John DeCaro won his sixth straight start, stopping 25 shots as Youngstown actually outshot the Mudbugs 27-20 in the game. The SteelHounds were 1 for 4 on the powerplay while Bossier-Shreveport went 1 for 3.
Up next, the Mudbugs will be getting right back on the ice for another contest only about 17 hours from the conclusion of Friday night's game. Bossier-Shreveport will be in Tulsa to take on the Oilers Saturday afternoon at 3:00 at the Tulsa Convention Center .
