Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Broomfield Event Center saw two of the Central Hockey League's top teams face off in the Southwest Division-leading Arizona Sundogs and the Northwest Division-leading Rocky Mountain Rage Friday night. The Sundogs carried an 11-4-1 record and three-game winning streak coming into Friday's contest while Rocky Mountain garnered a league-best 12-1-1 mark and seven-game unbeaten streak. Arizona topped the Rage 4-3 in overtime to improve to 8-0-0 on the season when scoring the game's first goal. With three points on the night, forward Tyler Redenbach extends his league-high point streak to 15 games, having tallied at least a point in every game he has played for Arizona this season.
Arizona's top-rated powerplay tallied the game's first score at 13:54 of the first as defenseman Dan Laperriere and second-year pro Karl Sellan teamed up to find Tyler Redenbach open at the top of slot. Redenbach took the pass and fired the puck past Rage netminder Scott Reid for his seventh goal on the season. The Sundogs closed out the first period on their third man advantage as Rage captain Brent Cullaton was tagged with his second penalty of the period with just 29 seconds to play. Arizona held a 15-8 advantage in shots through the opening 20 minutes of play.
Rocky Mountain pulled even at 1-1 just two minutes and five seconds into the middle period as Scott Wray threw a puck towards Arizona goaltender Andrew Gallant and found the back of the net off a Sundogs defenseman. Simon Watson and Pat Sutton were credited with assists on the even-strength equalizer. The Rage grabbed its first lead of the game at 9:26 of the middle frame as Chip Dunleavy took a pass in the slot and lifted to puck past Gallant for his club's first powerplay goal of the game. Brent Cullaton and Watson paired up for assists on the man advantage marker. Arizona matched the Colorado club and pulled even at two goals apiece as Redenbach collected his league-leading 24th assist along with forward Michael Bartlett as rookie forward Dusty Collins pushed the puck past Reid for his fifth goal of the season. With 5:23 to play in the middle period the Rage regained a one-goal lead on a Trevor Weisgerber powerplay marker from Tyler Butler and Cullaton. Less than three minutes later Sundogs forward Collins notched his second of the game on passes from Bartlett and Chris Bartolone to tie the game at 3-3. Opposite the first period, Rocky Mountain outshot Arizona by a 12-7 mark.
Neither team was able to break the 3-3 tie in the third period, forcing an extra frame for the second time in as many games between the two clubs. Rocky Mountain won the only other match this season in overtime 5-4 on Oct. 27.
In the overtime frame, Tyler Redenbach proved to be the hero, scoring his and Arizona's second shorthanded goal of the season to give his club its fourth straight win. Defenseman Matt Suderman collected an assist on the game winning tally to help his club improve to 12-4-1 on the season.
With the win, Arizona puts a stop to Rocky Mountain's seven-game winning streak while at the same time extending their winning streak to four games. The Rage outshot the Sundogs 40-31 in the contest. Sundogs netminder Andrew Gallant improves to 8-2-0 on the season, stopping 37 of 40 shots for the win, while Scott Reid drops his first of the season to fall to 8-1-0, blocking 27 of 31 shots. The Sundogs finished 1-for-10 with the man advantage while the Rage faired better with a 1-for-5 conversion rate.
