Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs got multiple points from seven different players on their way to an impressive 6-1 victory over the Texas Brahmas on Saturday night at CenturyTel Center . Bossier-Shreveport has now won a season-high seven straight games and 12 in a row on home ice.
The Mudbugs broke open a scoreless game with four second period goals and Ken Carroll did the rest between the pipes, stopping 21 shots to win his sixth consecutive start.
The first period was memorable more for the hot tempers than the hockey. Numerous shoving matches occurred throughout the period, and a pair of them escalated into fights. Chris Brassard squared off with Chris Thompson at center ice in one bout, while the other featured Derek Miller taking on Mark Cody late in the period. Despite all the action in the opening period, it still ended scoreless.
Bossier-Shreveport then took control of the game in the second period of play and didn't look back. First off, Brett Smith put home the rebound of a Dale Lupul shot to put the âBugs on top. Then just 37 seconds later, Kevin Cooper finished off a Jason Basile rebound to make it 2-0. Two more quick goals then came later in the period for Bossier-Shreveport's powerplay unit. With the Mudbugs on a 5 on 3 man advantage, Lupul fired a wrist shot off the post and in from the top of the circle to extend the lead to 3-0 âBugs. This time, another goal followed only 39 seconds later, as Tyrel Lucas scored on a rebound during the ensuing 5 on 4 powerplay; and it was a 4-0 Mudbugs lead after two.
The onslaught continued into the third period, when Karlis Zirnis banked the puck off Texas goaltender David Cacciola and into the net just over a minute in. Cacciola was then pulled in favor of Jim Healey in goal. Quade Lightbody and Robin Big Snake dropped the gloves a short time later in the game's third fight. Texas broke up Ken Carroll's shutout effort at 7:53 on Jordan Cameron's goal that made the score 5-1. Tyrel Lucas then picked up another goal late in the third to provide the final score of 6-1.
In addition to Lucas' two goals, Lupul and Smith each picked up a goal and an assist, while Daniel Pegoraro, Joe Ori, Chris Brassard and Justin Aikins each finished with a pair of assists on the night. The Mudbugs finished with a season-high 14 powerplays, converting two of them while Texas was 1 for 9. The game featured 124 total minutes in penalties. Bossier-Shreveport outshot the Brahmas 35-22 in the contest.
Now with back-to-back wins against Texas , Bossier-Shreveport will take on the Brahmas one last time in 2007. On New Year's Eve in North Richland Hills, Texas , the Mudbugs and Brahmas will tangle again at the NyTex Sports Centre. Bossier-Shreveport hasn't visited the Brahmas' home building since a 4-3 overtime loss back on October 27th. Tune in on the radio to hear the action between the âBugs and Brahmas with the opening faceoff set for 6:00 pm and the pregame show starting at 5:45.
