Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Friday night in Pawtucket the Toledo Mud Hens lost a nail-biter to the Red Sox in extra innings. Thad Weber was lights out on the hill for the Hens, but the offense could only scratch across two runs for him. It took twelve innings, but the Red Sox were able to work up just enough offense to leave with a 3-2 victory.
The Hens broke through first, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Xavier Avery led off the inning with a double, and then Daniel Fields followed by drawing a walk. With two outs and runners on second and third, Jefry Marte laced a single up the middle to give Toledo a 2-0 lead.
Weber was as dominant as ever, allowing no runs for the second time this season. Coming off a start where he pitched into the ninth inning, he followed it up with another seven inning gem. In his seven innings of work against Pawtucket on Friday night, Weber gave up only three hits while striking out five batters. Friday night's game was Weber's fifth start of the year where he's gone at least seven innings, and his ERA is now down to 3.62.
In the eighth with the Mud Hens leading 2-0, Bruce Rondon came on for his eighth rehabilitation appearance of the year. For the Red Sox, Matt Spring led off the inning with a bloop single. Sean Coyle followed with a double to get Pawtucket on the board. With no outs, Jackie Bradley Jr. bunted to move Coyle over to third, but a throwing error on Rondon allowed Coyle to score and Bradley to get to second. Rondon then earned three outs in a row, but the score was already tied 2-2.
It wasn't until the twelfth inning that a team finally scored again. Sadly, it was the Red Sox that scratched a run across, givng them a walk-off victory. After two masterful innings out of the bullpen from Jose Valdez, Drew VerHagen came on in the eleventh and threw a scoreless frame. In the twelfth though, he walked two batters, and then gave up a double to Bradley to score the winning run for Pawtucket.
The Mud Hens are back in action on Saturday night in Pawtucket at 6:05 p.m. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
