June 12, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs are excited to be playing in the inaugural "Wiffle Ball Classic", Wednesday, June 17th at 6:05 p.m. Members of the Chiefs will play Wiffle ball against the CenterState Legends, a local group of community and business leaders, on the east lawn of the Museum of Science & Technology in Syracuse's Armory Square. Fans can bring folding chairs and watch the game downtown for free.

"The Chiefs are excited to engage our downtown community," said Chiefs General Manager Jason Smorol. "Getting an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for the MOST as well as beating Rob Simpson's CEO Centerstate Legends is a double play! We don't often get the opportunity to get the players out in the community as they play every day, so we are excited to have some fun, meet some fans, and put the spotlight on the MOST."

Chiefs pitchers Bruce Billings, Erik Davis, Mitch Lively and Scott McGregor, along with catcher Jeff Howell, are all scheduled to participate in the game. The group will be led by Chiefs president Bill Dutch.

"This game is backyard ball at its best and I am really excited about this opportunity to take on the Chiefs and support the MOST," said Robert Simpson, president of CenterState CEO. "We have an incredible team of community and business leaders playing for the CenterState Legends and I am confident we will give the Chiefs some real competition. I strongly encourage the community to come cheer us on during this fun family event."

Simpson and Patrick Mannion, vice chair of Columbian Financial Group, will be team captains of the CenterState Legends. Playing for the Legends will be Kimberly Boynton, CEO of Crouse Hospital; Pat Driscoll, director of operations for Say Yes to Education - Syracuse; David Katleski, owner of Empire Brewing Company and president of the NYS Brewers Association; Liz Liddy, the interim vice chancellor and provost at Syracuse University; Doug Logan, a sports broadcaster and community volunteer; Melissa Menon, director of On Point for College; John Tracy, international trade specialist at the U.S. Department of Commerce; Maureen McCarthy Tracy, senior account executive at Northland Communications; Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse; Ben Walsh, deputy commissioner of neighborhood and business development for the City of Syracuse; and the MOST's very own executive vice president, Anthony Ortega.

The Chiefs plan on making the Wiffle Ball Classic atmosphere as close to a real baseball game as possible. Team mascot Scooch will be at the game and available for pictures. In addition, Chiefs memorabilia will be raffled off and food vendors will be stationed nearby. In case of rain, the game will be moved inside the MOST.

Proceeds from the Wiffle Ball Classic will benefit the MOST's science education programs. Fans can help contribute by purchasing one of four luxury boxes overlooking the game or one of two spots as a batboy or batgirl for a child 15 or younger. Contact Anthony Ortega, Executive Vice President at the MOST, at 315-425-9068 x2120 or aortega@most.org for more details and a full list of opportunities. In addition, the MOST will be open after the game until 9 p.m.

The Wiffle Ball Classic is scheduled to take place after the Chiefs' 1:05 game with Toledo on Wednesday. Tickets to that game and all other home games are available and can be purchased online at syracusechiefs.com, by calling 315-474-7833 or by visiting the NBT Bank Stadium ticket office during regular business hours.
