Gwinnett Stripers News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -The Gwinnett Braves (30-30) ran out to an early 8-0 lead Friday at Victory Field and held off a furious comeback by the Indianapolis Indians (39-24) for a gritty 8-7 win to even the four-game series at one win apiece.
On paper, it appeared the game would be a duel against two of the top starting pitchers in the International League, Gwinnett right-hander Matt Wisler and righty Adrian Simpson of Indianapolis, as both had been named IL Pitcher of the Week twice in 2015.
However, both starters ended up having a tough night.
Gwinnett immediately jumped on Sampson, as leadoff batter Eury Perez doubled and moved to third on a bunt single by Jose Peraza. Joey Terdoslavich plated Perez with a sac fly to center field for a 1-0 lead. Peraza then stole second and scored when Ryan Lavarnway singled to right, which ran the G-Braves' lead to 2-0.
After a strong performance by Wisler in the bottom of the first, Gwinnett unloaded on Sampson in the top of the second for six runs. With two outs and Daniel Castro, who had singled earlier, on second, the G-Braves banged out seven consecutive hits.
A single to right by Peraza scored Castro for a 3-0 lead, and Terdoslavich doubled to right to put runners on second and third. Lavarnway shot a double down the third-base line that scored both Castro and Terdoslavich for a 5-0 lead. A single by Adonis Garcia scored Lavarnway to extend the lead to 6-0. Garcia moved to second on a single by Sean Kazmar and scored on another single by Eric Young, Jr., for a 7-0 lead. Finally Castro, batting for the second time in the inning, stroked a double to right, which scored Kazmar and gave the G-Braves a bulging 8-0 lead.
That would be the last run of the night for Gwinnett.
The Indians picked up the offense in the bottom of the third against Wisler, as a two-run triple by Alen Hanson and an RBI on a groundout by Gustavo Nunez cut the G-Braves' lead to 8-3.
Indianapolis got to Wisler even more in the fourth. The Indians scored four runs to cut the lead to one at 8-7, with the biggest blow a three-run home run by Elias Diaz. With two outs, the tying run on third and the go ahead run on second for the Indians, Gwinnett pulled Wisler in favor of Ryan Weber, and the right-hander from St. Petersburg, FL shut the door.
The Indians did not get a hit the rest of the night. Weber got Jaff Decker to ground out to shortstop to end the inning and the threat. Weber then went on to retire every batter he faced across the next three innings for a total of 10 outs in a row. Further relief help from righties David Carpenter and Ryan Kelly nailed down the one-run victory.
Wisler went 3.2 innings with eight hits, seven earned runs and two walks. Weber (W, 1-0) worked 3.1 innings with two strikeouts, Carpenter pitched 1.0 inning with one strikeout and Kelly (S, 3) worked 1.0 scoreless inning.
Sampson (L, 6-4) was charged with eight earned runs and gave up 12 hits over 1.2 innings of work. Right-hander Collin Balester was sharp out of the Indians bullpen, as he entered in the top of the second and quieted the G-Braves' bats. He pitched 4.1 scoreless innings with one hit and four strikeouts. Left-hander Bobby LaFromboise went 1.0 scoreless inning; righty John Holdzkom pitched 1.0 inning with two hits and one strikeout. Right-hander Deolis Guerra finished the game for the Tribe with a scoreless top of the ninth.
The G-Braves banged out 15 hits but had only three after their six-run top of the second. Castro was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Terdoslavich was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Perez, Peraza, Lavarnway and Garcia were each 2-for-5. Lavarnway drove in three runs.
For Indianapolis, Diaz was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer, and both Nunez and Gorkys Hernandez were 2-for-4.
The G-Braves and Indians meet in game three of the four-game series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night at Victory Field. Left-handed pitcher Greg Smith (2-3, 2.86) will be on the mound for Gwinnett. Indianapolis will start fellow lefty Clayton Richard (3-1, 1.69). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
