More pitching produces another close loss

COMSTOCK PARK - A ninth inning run on an infield hit proved to be the difference as Dayton came from behind to edge the Whitecaps, 3-2. The loss is the sixth in the last seven games for West Michigan.

Jair Jurrjens went 6.2 innings and allowed two runs as Dayton tied the game 2-2 in the top of the seventh on a ground ball that was dropped behind second by Whitecaps shortstop Brent Dlugach. John Purdon was awarded a hit and collected an RBI as Jeremiah Piepkorn scored from second.

Purdon later scored the wining run on a ninth inning single by Phil Gentry.

West Michigan tied the game, 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a ground-out by Justin Justice.

Jeff Frazier launched his fourth home run of the season to left in the sixth to put the Whitecaps in front, 2-1.

Dayton's first run came on Bobby Mosby's solo home run in the fifth. Anthony Tomey allowed the ninth inning run and took the loss for West Michigan.

Homer Bailey started the game for the Dragons with four scoreless innings and one hit allowed. Jared Sanders gave up a two-out double to Nick McIntyre in the bottom of the ninth, but finished the inning to earn his fifth save in nine tries this season.

Try for a Split: West Michigan will look to earn a 2-2 split in the series with a win in the finale on Thursday. RHP Matt Righter (1-0, 2.86) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against RHP Ramon Ramirez (0-1, 4.07).
