Dayton Dragons News Release

Comstock Park, MI – Wednesday afternoon's game between the Dayton Dragons (19-26) and the West Michigan Whitecaps (20-26) looked like an offensive explosion in comparison to the first two games of the series between the two clubs. In Monday and Tuesday's games both teams combined for three runs and 14 hits. In Dayton's 3-2 win on Wednesday afternoon, the Dragons picked up ten hits as a club and out pitched the leagues best pitching staff.

Once again, the starting pitching in the series between the Dragons and Whitecaps proved to be first rate. West Michigan had the league's best ERA as a staff entering play on Wednesday at 3.30. Dayton pitching had allowed just 10 earned runs in its last five games. Dragons starter Homer Bailey (ND) and Whitecaps starter Jair Jurjenns (ND) each kept the opposition off the board through the first four innings of play. Bailey's day was done following a 4.0 inning stint. The right hander allowed only one hit while striking out five and walking one before departing. Jurjenns afternoon lasted longer as the right hander for the ‘Caps tossed 6.2 innings before departing in the seventh.

The game was scoreless heading into the top of the fifth inning before Dragons first baseman Bobby Mosby changed that with his first home run of the 2005 season. Mosby, who hit the solo shot to put Dayton up 1-0, was playing in his first game since injuring a knee on April 15th at Fifth Third Field.

West Michigan tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off Alexander Farfan (ND). Josh Lee singles to right to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Farfan walk. A sac bunt and an RBI ground out from Justin Justice and the game was tied at 1-1.

The Whitecaps took a short lived 2-1 lead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning off Joe Wilson (WP, 1-0). Jeff Frazier slugged his fourth homer of the season; lead off shot to left to give WM the one run advantage.

The Dragons would tie the game at 2-2 in the seventh inning on an RBI single by John Purdom and then take a 3-2 with a single run in the top of the ninth inning. Purdom led off the ninth with a single to left off Anthony Tomey (LP, 2-4). Purdom moved to second on a sac bunt by Anderson. Pinch hitter Tonys Gutierrez picked up an infield single and the Dragons were in business with first and third and just one down. Phil Gentry broke the 2-2 tie with a single to left that scored Purdom and gave Dayton a 3-2 lead.

Jared Sanders (SV, 5) came on to pick up the save and got the job done, preserving the win for Wilson. Sanders picked up the first two outs of the inning on a ground out and a strikeout, before surrendering a two out double to Nick McIntyre. Andrew Graham fouled out to first baseman Mosby and the Dragons picked up their second win of the series in three games.

The Dragons and Whitecaps wrap up the four game series at Fifth Third Ballpark with a 6:35 PM first pitch on Thursday night. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:00 PM. The Dragons are scheduled to throw RHP Ramon Ramirez, with West Michigan sending RHP Matt Righter to the mound.
