Beloit drops Kernels behind strong pitching

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

On a cool, crisp evening in Beloit the Kernels had no answer for the Snappers' Anthony Swarzak as they fell to the Minnesota Twins farmhands 5-1 at Pohlman Field.

Swarzak struck out 13 Kernels and held the visitors to just two hits - both by Drew Toussaint - over eight innings. Swarzak allowed the Kernels only run in the fifth after Toussaint doubled to right to start the inning. After Warner Madrigal was hit by a pitch, catcher Tommy Duenas attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt up the first base line. His attempt was not only successful, but thanks to Mother Nature it plated Toussaint. Beloit first baseman Mark Zamojc was blinded by the setting sun and did not see the throw to first as it sailed past him and up the right field line. Swarzak retired the next three batters to end the best hope Cedar Rapids had for a big inning on Wednesday night.

Cedar Rapids starter Karl Gelinas was a hard-luck loser after tossing six and two-thirds innings and giving the Snappers just two runs on eight hits.

Beloit put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth when Deacon Burns launched a two-run homer, his second of the game, off Kernel reliever Jamie Douglas. The Snappers added another run off Chris Waters, who relieved Douglas immediately following Burns' blast.

The loss was the team's second in a row after having a five game winning streak snapped by the Snappers on Tuesday night. With the loss the Kernels fall to 19-27 on the year.

The Snappers and Kernels will close out their four-game series at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Pohlman Field. Cedar Rapids returns to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday to open an eight-game home stand with the first of four games against the South Bend Silver Hawks. Game time is 6:30 p.m. and gates open at 5:30.
