Knoff returns to Swing

After a two-day stint in extended spring training, the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday transferred Justin Knoff back to the Swing of the Quad Cities. Knoff takes the roster spot of righthander Dennis Medina, who has been placed on the disabled list with right shoulder stiffness.

Knoff, a 23-year-old righty from Burlington, New Jersey, was sent to extended spring training on Monday to make room for former National League Rookie of the Year Rick Ankiel, who is playing with the Swing as an outfielder. In 17 relief outings with the Swing, Knoff has gone 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 22 innings. The Cardinals acquired Knoff from Cincinnati in the Double-A Phase of the Rule Five draft this past offseason. In 56 professional outings, including 13 starts, he has gone 14-6 with a 2.84 ERA. Knoff was originally selected by Cincinnati in the 30th round of the 2002 draft, out of Siena College.

Medina, a 22-year-old righthander from Cabimas, Venezuela, has gone 1-0 with a 0.56 ERA in nine relief appearances for the Swing, allowing only one earned run in 16 innings. He has struck out 20 men while walking none, allowing just 11 base hits. Medina worked three innings to earn his only win of the season last Tuesday, when Quad Cities beat Beloit, 5-3, in 13 innings. Medina was originally signed out of Venezuela by the Minnesota Twins, and signed with the Cardinals as a previously-released free agent in December.

The Swing roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster follows this release.

UP NEXT: The Swing and Lugnuts play the third game of the series and of the Swing's eight-game homestand on Wednesday, when Quad Cities sends Matt Scherer (1-2, 4.26) goes to the hill against lefty Chi-Hung Cheng (3-2, 2.34). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 6:45. Tickets are available to all Swing home games by calling (563) 328-2000.

PROMOTION: Wednesday will be a Hooters/97 Rock Beverage Night at the ballpark, featuring live music from Pappa Razzi on the ballpark from 5:30 until 7:00, and discounted drink specials until 8:00.

HOMESTAND REPORT: The Swing's upcoming homestand runs through Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. The Swing will be giving away I-Wireless Swing T-Shirts on Friday night, and BirdZerk! will come to town on Saturday. Sunday night will be a 7:00 start time followed by post-game fireworks, courtesy of KWQC-TV6, and Monday will be a special Memorial Day matinee.
