Burlington Bees News Release
South Bend, IN (May 25, 2005) - AJ Shappi (7-1) pitched his second complete game of the esseason and limited the Burlington Bees (20-25) to just one run on five hits in the South Bend Silver Hawks (27-19) 4-1 victory at Coveleski Stadium this afternoon. The Silver Hawks lead the series 2-1.
Frustration started for the Bees early after a bad call in the top of the second. Rusty Brown led off with a single and after two outs, tried to score from first on a double to the wall in right-center by Eddie Solis. Brown beat the throw and slid under the tag, but was called out. Bees' Manager Jim Gabella came out to argue and earned his first ejection of the year. The Bees would get their only run in the top of the fifth inning. Alan Moye led off with a double, went to third on an infield single by Ed Lucas, and scored as Solis reached on a fielder's choice and picked up the RBI. The Bees would get just one more hit against Shappi the rest of the way. Shappi allowed five hits and one walk and struck out one.
The Silver Hawks got on the board against Bees' starter Patrick Green (2-3) in the third. Jereme Milons led off with a double and scored on a single by Alberto Gonzalez. Gonzalez was caught stealing before Emilio Bonifacio singled and scored on a double by Wilkin Castillo to make it 2-0. The Silver Hawks added two more in the fifth. Gonzalez singled and scored when Bonifacio bunted and Green threw the ball down the right field line for an error. Agustin Murillo finished the scoring with a bloop single to right to drive in Bonifacio from second. Green worked through six complete. Yovany Damico and Rusty Begnaud each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Frustration boiled over in the top of the ninth. With a runner on and one out, Shappi hit Geraldo Valentin with a pitch. It was the second time Valentin had been hit in the series and he and Shappi exchanged words when Valentin got to first and the benches started to empty. After things were calmed down, Shappi got a flyout and a groundout to end the inning. As Valentin walked off the field from second base, Shappi started another exchange with him and the two had to be separated again. No one else was ejected from the game.
The Bees and Silver Hawks wrap up this series tomorrow night at 6:30 at Coveleski Stadium. RH Patrick Hicklen (2-1, 2.38) will start for the Bees against RH Russ Ohlendorf (2-4, 3.91) for the Silver Hawks. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
