
Chiefs Fall to Southwest Michigan, 7-6

Peoria, IL â The Peoria Chiefs fell to the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays 7-6 Wednesday night after squandering a two-run lead in the 8th inning. The Devil Rays scored five times in the 8th to take a 7-5 lead and would hang on in the 9th for a one-run victory.
Peoria relief pitcher Jon Hunton entered the 8th inning with a 5-2 lead before Southwest Michigan third baseman Travis Schlichting led off the inning by reaching on a Hunton error, followed by a single from Christian Lopez. The wheels fell off from there for Peoria, as the D-Rays added a walk, a double, a triple, and sacrifice fly to score five times in the inning.
In the bottom of the 9th, Sam Fuld tripled to lead off the inning off D-Rays reliever Ryan Bitter and later scored on a wild pitch to Eric Patterson. Aaron Sisk grounded out to end the game with Patterson stranded on first base.
Sisk opened all scoring in the bottom of the 1st with a home run to left field, his first of the season and first as a Chief, to give Peoria a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th on a two-run triple from Patterson.
SW Michigan scored twice in the top half of the 6th inning, and appeared to tie the game one inning later at 3-3 on an RBI groundout from Francisco Leandro. The ball hit by Leandro was eventually ruled foul, sending Leandro back to the plate and reversing the score back to 3-2. Leandro eventually struck out and the Chiefs escaped the inning with their lead intact.
The Chiefs would strike again in the bottom of the 7th on another run-scoring triple from Patterson, his second of the night. He would later score on a wild pitch to give the Chiefs a 5-2 lead.
Hunton took the loss for Peoria, working just 2/3 of an inning and allowing five runs, three of which were earned. Southwest Michigan relief pitcher Calvin Carpenter earned the victory after entering the game in the 6th inning and allowing just one hit in 1 1/3 innings.

Eric Patterson (2B) â Patterson went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a pair of triples. He drove in three runs on the night in running his hit streak to nine games, the longest streak of the season for a Chiefs player.
Notes... Patterson tied a franchise record with two triples in a game...He's the sixth player to do so and the first since Gabe Johnson on August 15, 2001...The blown save by Hunton was his third of the season in six chances...The Chiefs and Devil Rays will wrap up their four-game series on Thursday night on a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday...The first 1500 fans over the age of 21 will receive home jersey bottle koozies...Mike & Joe will perform after the game...you can hear the action on 1350 WOAM and www.peoriachiefs.com.
