Moose Take Series Opener 3-2 Over Rivermen

Marco Rosa's third period goal proved to be the difference in a 5-2 win for the Manitoba Moose over the Peoria Rivermen on Monday night at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB. Manitoba's power play, which came in ranked 28th in the league, posted a 2-for-5 performance against the Rivermen top-ranked penalty kill in the opening game of the two-game set.

Nathan Oystrick put Peoria ahead 1-0 at 9:43 of the second period with his team on a power play. His wrist shot from the high-slot sailed into the top-right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season and fourth power-play marker. Nikita Nikitin and T.J. Hensick added the assists, which was Hensick's team-leading 18th assist and 26th point.

Manitoba quickly tied the game on a Mark Flood power-play goal at 11:05 in the second period. Just his second goal of the season, Flood snuck a slapshot through a screened Jake Allen at 11:05. The Moose captured a 2-1 lead just 3:17 later with another power-play goal. Sergei Shirokov tapped home a deflected shot into an open net from the bottom of the right circle.

Rookie Phil McRae's 11th goal of the season tied the score, 2-2, with only 4:17 left in the second. Tyler Shattock intercepted a pass in the right corner before sliding a pass to McRae in the slot who sent a quick snapshot past Eddie Lack's blocker.

With a pair of players in the box and both teams skating at four aside, the Moose retrieved the lead for good at 4:24 in the third period. Marco Rosa wristed in his fourth of the season while tumbling to the ice after collecting a rebound in the slot.

Bill Sweatt added the fourth Manitoba goal at 18:19 of the third period after a beautiful display of passing. Sweatt, Victor Oreskovich and Rosa converted the 3-on-1 with a pair of cross-ice passes before Sweatt slammed home his seventh of the year.

Jonas Andersson scored the final goal into the empty-net with 20 seconds left on the clock.

Lack finished with 28 saves to push the Moose, and his personal, win streak to four games. Allen suffered his first regulation loss since Nov. 14 and wound up with 29 stops.

The two teams will finish up the series on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Peoria is now 0-2-0 this season against the Moose and have not beaten them in Manitoba since Jan. 18, 2008.
