Manitoba Moose News Release
NOTHING THROUGH HERE: Moose goaltender Eddie Lack earned his first career AHL shutout on Dec. 18 vs. the Houston Aeros in a 1-0 win. His 60 minutes of shutout hockey, combined with the previous game where Lack didn't allow a goal through nearly all of the second and third period against Houston, has extended Manitoba's longest shutout streak of the season to 97:43. Manitoba's longest shutout streak last season lasted from Dec. 12-19/09 and was halted at 100:09. That streak was split between goalies Cory Schneider and Daren Machesney. The Moose all-time record is 179:56, set in the 2003-04 season by Tyler Moss.
CURE WHAT AILS YOU: The Moose suffered an unfortunate string of injuries through December losing the services of forwards Kevin Clark, Cody Hodgson, and Jordan Schroeder. Because of injuries, both in Manitoba and with their NHL affiliate in Vancouver, the Moose have taken on a few new faces and welcomed back an old one. Garth Murray, who has previously played 116 NHL games, and Josh Aspenlind joined the Moose from the ECHL's Victoria Salmon Kings. The Vancouver Canucks also re-assigned Guillaume Desbiens who chalked up 34 points (19g, 15a) in 67 games for the Moose last season.
HAPPENING ON SPECIAL TEAMS: Manitoba's power play had dropped to the bottom of the AHL until the Moose racked up three goals on five power plays on Dec. 17. They moved up two spots in the league's rank and have four goals on the man advantage in the past three games. In the same game Victor Oreskovich scored the first of those four power play goals on Dec. 14, Mario Bliznak recorded Manitoba's first shorthanded goal of the season when he sealed a 3-1 win with an empty net goal. The Moose have not allowed a shorthanded goal against this season.
It's not easy to hold onto a winning streak, but having nine days between games can certainly help that. The Moose won three straight heading into their recent Holiday Break with their last game was on Dec. 18. That night, Manitoba defeated the visiting Houston Aeros then didn't hit the ice again until practice on Boxing Day. The Moose will try to defend their nearly two-week winning streak on Monday, Dec. 27 when they host the Peoria Rivermen for the first of back-to-back games.
The Moose will keep MTS Centre packed for the next six nights with a pair of games against both the Peoria Rivermen (December 27 & 28) and the Chicago Wolves (December 31 & Jan. 1). Manitoba resumes their post-break AHL schedule with at least four games in hand on the rest of the North Division. The Moose can make up ground in their division with 12 of the next 14 games at home, including six of those games against divisional opponents.
