Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Southern League announced today that former Biscuits left-hander Matt Moore has been named 2011's Most Outstanding Pitcher.
Just 22-years-old, Moore went 8-3 for the Biscuits over 18 starts and posted a league-best 2.20 ERA, winning five-straight starts before his promotion to triple-A Durham at the end of July. He recorded an incredible 131 strikeouts in 102 innings, while walking just 28. Moore's biggest highlight came on June 16th in Mobile, when he hurled the first no-hitter in Biscuits history against one of the league's top offenses in the BayBears. He also stole the show with a perfect inning at MLB's All-Star Futures Game in Arizona in July.
He has continued to dazzle since his promotion to Durham, going 3-0 with a 1.35 in eight starts. He's also reached the 200-strikeout plateau for the second year in-a-row.
Widely considered the top pitching prospect in all of minor league baseball, the Albuquerque, NM, native is in his 5th pro season. He was drafted in the 8th round in 2007 out of Moriarty High School, and has a chance to lead minor league baseball in strikeouts for the third-straight year. His current total of 200 sits 8 behind the minor league leader.
Moore is the second Biscuit to win Most Outstanding Pitcher, and the first since Chris Mason earned the award in 2007. The award comes on the heels of Post-Season Southern League All-Star honors that he enjoyed along with former Biscuits catcher Stephen Vogt.
The Biscuits conclude their season with a five-game series at AT&T Field in Chattanooga with the Lookouts starting Thursday night.
