Mississippi Braves News Release
Zebulon, NC - The Mississippi Braves and Carolina Mudcats played to a 3-3 tie over the first five innings, but six runs over the final three framesuding three home runs, helped the Braves come out on top 9-3 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
With two men on in the top of the seventh, Ernesto Mejia hit a two-run double to right-center, putting the Braves (33-33, 58-78) ahead for good. It was Mejia's second hit of the night and his 142nd of the season, pulling him to within one of tying the Mississippi Braves' single season record.
Meanwhile, Chris Cody settled in nicely after the fifth, allowing just two Mudcats (29-36, 52-83) of the final four innings in a complete game victory. It was the Braves' second nine-inning complete game in a week, as Zeke Spruill went the distance against Birmingham in a 1-0 loss on Saturday.
Mississippi got three home runs in the ballgame, one each from Sean Henry, Braeden Schlehuber, and Ed Lucas. Henry's blast against his former team broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth, a solo shot off the scoreboard, his first of the season. Schlehuber hit a solo shot in the eighth, his first, whereas Lucas hit a two-run blast in the ninth for insurance, his fourth.
In addition to Henry and Mejia's heroics at the plate, Cory Harrilchak got two hits, including his 23rd double of the year.
Carolina's Kyle McCulloch fell to his seventh loss of the season in relief.
The Braves and Mudcats play game two of a five game series on Friday night at 6:15 PM CDT. 21-year-old right-hander Zeke Spruill climbs the hill for Mississippi against Carolina right-hander James Avery.
