Published on September 1, 2011 under Southern League (SL1) News Release
MARIETTA, GA- The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs is pleased to announce that Montgomery Biscuits left hander Matt Moore has been named its Most Outstanding Pitcher as voted upon by the league's field managers, radio broadcasters and print media.
Born in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, Moore attended Moriarty High School in Moriarty, New Mexico where he was named Gatorade's New Mexico Player of the Year in 2007. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the eighth round (245th overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. He led the Minor Leagues with a 12.75 SO/9 IP ratio and a .154 opponent average in 2008 with the Rookie level Princeton Rays and led the Minors with 176 strikeouts in just 123 innings and led all full-season Minor Leaguers with a 12.88 SO/9 IP and a .195 opponent average in 2009 with the Bowling Green Hot Rods and was named Most Valuable Player for that club. Moore threw a seven-inning no- hitter against the Asheville Tourists with 12 strikeouts on June 6, 2009. He led the Minors with 208 strikeouts in 2010 with the High-A Charlotte Stone Crabs, becoming the first Minor Leaguer to eclipse 200 strikeouts since 2005, and the first Florida State League pitcher to do so since 1971.
Entering the 2011 season with the Montgomery Biscuits, Moore was ranked No. 27 among Top 50 Prospects by MLB.com. Moore was a serious force throughout most of the season with Montgomery, with an 8-3 winning record and 131 strikeouts in 102.1 innings. In Moore's very first game defending against Birmingham on April 7, he struck out seven of the Barons batters in just 5.0 innings. Moore led the league in strikeouts throughout his stint with the Biscuits and still has the second-most for 2011. In fact, he only pitched one game out of eighteen where he threw less than five. Out of 400 batters faced, he only gave up 25 earned runs, leaving his Southern League ERA at a slender 2.20.
Moore was chosen as the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for May 23-29 after tossing 11 strikeouts against Jacksonville in just 6.0 innings of work on May 26. He would again strike out eleven starting against Mobile on June 16 and 10 Tennessee batters on July 6. After pitching in the Southern League All-Star Game and the All-Star Futures Game, Moore was promoted to Triple-A Durham July 19. So far he has a 3-0 winning record, a 1.35 ERA and 69 strikeouts in just eight starts.
