Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- Mississippi's Chris Cody tossed the first nine-inning complete game of his career, leading Mississippi to a 9-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium on Thursday night.

Cody, who threw 113 pitches in the victory, surrendered a 1-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a two-out uprising by the Mudcats (29-36). Didi Gregorius tripled with two down, then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. After a bloop single by Jake Kahaulelio, Eric Campbell doubled into the left field corner to give Carolina the lead.

Josh Ravin mimicked Cody by uncorking a wild pitch in the fourth to score Cary, NC native Cory Harrilchak with the equalizer. The Braves (33-33) took the lead in the fifth on a solo homer by former Mudcat Sean Henry, who hit 16 homers in his two years as a Mudcat in 2009 and 2010.

Campbell tied the game in the fifth on a two-out single to score reliever Kyle McCulloch before Cody (W, 3-1) took over for good. The Mudcats managed just two hits in the final four innings en route to his second win in two starts against Carolina.

Cody had thrown a pair of seven-inning CGs, and a rain-shortened five inning complete game earlier in his career from 2008-2010, but his final inning was given the green light after Ed Lucas homered in the top of the ninth with a man on to lift the lead to 9-3. Benino Pruneda, who was loosening in the bullpen sat down as Cody completed his outing.

Ravin worked five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and fanning four. McCulloch (L, 6-7) retired the first five of his outing before allowing four straight to reach in the seventh to absorb the loss. Ernesto Mejia doubled home two runs to put Mississippi in the lead 5-3.

Braeden Schlehuber homered against Tim Gustafson in the eighth to cap a three-homer night for the Braves.

James Avery (6-12) starts the series' second game on Friday night at 7:15 PM ET.
