Barons Extinguish Smokies, 5-3

Hoover, AL - Seth Loman smashed his 19th home run of the season in the third inning as the Birmingham Barons (29-37, 69-67) extinguished the Tennessee Smokies (38-28, 81-55), 5-3, in front of 2,399 fans Thursday night at Regions Park.

The Barons jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Tyler Kuhn lined a leadoff single up the middle and sprinted to third on Christian Marrero's single to center field. Jon Gilmore smacked a two-run, ground-rule double over the left-center field wall that cleared the bases for the first runs of the game.

In the bottom of the second inning, Kuhn lined a single to center field and advanced to second on the throw for Brandon Short, who collected a RBI ground-rule double over the center-field wall as the Barons took a three-run advantage, 3-0.

Josh Phegley drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the third inning before Loman smashed his 19th home run of the season off the right-field scoreboard that gave the Barons a five-run edge, 5-0.

Nelson Perez knocked a leadoff double in the top of the sixth inning and then scored after two groundouts pushed him around the bases as the Smokies cut the deficit to four, 5-1.

In the top of the eighth inning, Perez lined a one-out single to right field that was followed by a walk to James Adduci and a single by Jae-Hoon Ha. With the sacks packed, Blake Lalli was hit by a pitch and Rebel Ridling drew a walk as the Smokies added two runs in the inning, 5-3

Terry Doyle (7-5) earned the victory for the Barons as the right-hander surrendered three earned runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts in 7.2 IP. Nathan Jones (S, 12) locked down the save with 1 hit, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts in 1.1 IP.

Brooks Raley (8-10) received the loss for the Smokies after he threw 4.0 IP with five earned runs on 9 hits, 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Birmingham and Tennessee tackle in game two of their five-game series Friday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. at Regions Park. The Barons hand the ball to left-hander Hector Santiago (7-5, 3.61) while the Smokies turn to southpaw Eric Jokisch (1-0, 4.11).
