Mobile BayBears News Release
MOBILE, Ala. - On Thursday, the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced its 2011 Most Valuable Player, and for the first time ever, it's a Mobile BayBear as first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was revealed as the recipient of the prestigious honor.
Goldschmidt clubbed a franchise-record 30 home runs before his promotion to the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 1. He also drove in 94 runs while leading the BayBears with a .306 batting average. His 82 walks, on-base percentage and slugging percentage are still league standards.
Goldschmidt, 23, is the MVP of a league for the second consecutive season. He was also the Most Valuable Player in the California League last year with the Visalia Rawhide when he ripped 35 homers and knocked home 108 runs.
Goldschmidt has had an incredible season from the very start when he punished two home runs in Carolina on Opening Day. He was named to the U.S. roster for the XM All-Star Futures Game in Arizona on July 10. On Wednesday, he was announced as the 2011 USA Today Minor League Player of the Year.
The Second Half South Division Champion BayBears begin their final regular season series on Thursday against the Huntsville Stars from Joe Davis Stadium at 6:43 p.m. The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday, September 10 for game three of the South Division Championship Series against the Birmingham Barons at 7:05 p.m. There will be a fireworks show after the ballgame and a 9/11 tribute before the contest. For tickets, which start at $5 for kids and $7 for adults, please call (251) 479-BEAR or visit www.mobilebaybears.com. You can also follow the BayBears all season long on Facebook and Twitter.
