Iowa Cubs News Release
Salt Lake City, UT - Lou Montanez' three-run double keyed a four-run ninth inning that lifted the Iowa Cubs (57-68) to a 9-7 win over the Salt Lake Bees (57-68) at Spring Mobile Ballpark tonight. Tonight is the Cubs' fifth win this season when trailing after eight innings. The Cubs lead this series 2-0 and are now 3-3 on this road trip.
The Bees got on the board early on solo home runs by Paul McAnulty in the first inning and Efren Navarro in the second off Cubs' starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx. The Cubs got one back in the fourth when Montanez doubled, moved to third on a flyout, and scored on a groundout by Bryan LaHair.
The Cubs scored three time in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Ryan Flaherty tripled and scored on a base hit by Marwin Gonzalez. After strikeout, Brett Jackson added a triple of his own for an RBI and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Montanez.
The Bees answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to chase Bibens-Dirkx from the game. Navarro connected on a second home run, a three-run shot, as part of the rally. Hung-Wen Chen entered the game with two on and two outs and gave up a single by Rian Kiniry that extended the Bees' lead to 6-4 lead.
The Cubs cut the lead back to one when Bryan LaHair led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer off Bees' starter Bear Bay. LaHair has four home runs in six games on this road trip and leads all of minor league baseball with 34 home runs. He is three homers away from Iowa's single-season record. The Bees answered the run in bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Jeremy Moore.
The Bees held that two-run advantage until they turned the ball over to their closer Michael Kohn for the ninth. D.J. LeMahieu led off with a single, but with one out, was thrown out trying to go to third on a base hit by Gonzalez. Chris Robinson followed with a single to keep the Cubs alive and Kohn walked Jackson to load the bases for Montanez. Montanez connected on a fly ball to deep center that fell for a double and cleared the bases to give the Cubs an 8-7 lead. Montanez moved to third on an errant pickoff attempt and scored on a double by Brad Snyder to complete the rally.
Scott Maine (3-4) had struck out two in a scoreless eighth and came back out for the ninth. He struck out the side in the ninth to complete the win. Kohn (1-3) was charged with a blown save and the loss. The Cubs have won consecutive road games for the first time since June 14-15 at Omaha.
The Cubs and Bees continue this series tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m Central time. RH Alberto Cabrera (2-4, 6.31) will be activated to start for the Cubs against RH Matt Oye (0-0, 0.00) for the Bees. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 7:45.
