Round Rock Express News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Brad Nelson drove in Nick Green in the first inning and that proved to be all the Round Rock Express pitching staff needed as they shut out the Fresno Grizzlies 1-0 Wednesday night in Pacific Coast League action. The Express (74-51) have won the first two games of the four-game series against the Grizzlies (54-70).
With two outs in the top of the first, Green singled to left field and advanced to second on Edgar Gonzalez's fielding error to get himself into scoring position. Yesterday's hero, Nelson, then singled to left-center to drive in the only run of the game - an unearned run - off Andrew Kown.
Kown (10-9) got the loss for Fresno. He allowed the one unearned run on two hits while walking one before exiting in the first inning with an injury.
Express starter Mark Hamburger (6-4) got the win in his second professional start. He pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and walking one while striking out four. Hamburger has not allowed a run over his two starts, a combined 9.1 innings.
The Grizzlies threatened in the sixth inning. Singles by Conor Gillaspie and Brett Pill put two runners on with one out, but Express reliever Cody Eppley was able to get Bill Hall striking out and Brandon Crawford to ground out.
With one out in the eighth, Zach Jackson walked Gonzalez and Gillaspie, but Tanner Scheppers came in and got Pill to ground into the double play on two pitches. Scheppers pitched the ninth earning his first save of the year for the Express.
Eppley and Jackson combined on two scoreless innings, allowing one hit while walking two and striking out one.
Green was the only Express player with a multiple-hit game. Chad Tracy delivered the lone extra-base hit for the Express, a double in the fourth inning.
The Express and the Grizzlies meet for the third game of the four-game series Thursday night at 9:05 p.m. CDT. Right-hander Brett Tomko (6-5, 6.59 ERA) is scheduled to make his second start of the road trip for the Express, while righty Daryl Maday (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his first start of the year at the Triple-A level for the Grizzlies.
