
Monsters Sign Veteran Defenseman McCarthy to PTO

CLEVELAND - In advance of a Saturday road clash vs. the Grand Rapids Griffins, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters signed veteran defenseman Steve McCarthy to a 25-game Professional Tryout Contract (PTO), the team announced Friday. A first-round selection by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft (23rd overall), McCarthy has two goals, nine points and 18 penalty minutes to his credit in 30 appearances this season for the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings.
A 34 year-old native of Trail, BC, McCarthy registered 17 goals, 55 points and 168 penalty minutes in 302 career NHL appearances for the Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Thrashers spanning parts of eight seasons from 1999 to 2008. In 174 career AHL appearances for the Norfolk Admirals, Chicago Wolves, Abbotsford Heat, Springfield Falcons and Iowa Wild spanning parts of six seasons from 2000 to 2015, McCarthy, a 6'1", 209 lb. left-handed shooter, contributed 13 goals, 60 points and 120 penalty minutes.
McCarthy's international pro experience includes 18 KHL appearances for Ufa Salavat Yulayev during the 2008-09 season, 32 Liiga appearances for TPS Turku in 2010-11 and 38 appearances for ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League A spanning parts of three seasons from 2011 to 2014, during which McCarthy helped capture the 2011-12 and 2013-14 NLA Championships.
Prior to his professional career, McCarthy contributed 43 goals, 128 points, 174 penalty minutes and a +8 rating in 154 WHL appearances for the Edmonton Ice and Kootenay Ice spanning parts of four seasons from 1996 to 2000.
