Springfield Falcons News Release

Hartford, CT - Craig Cunningham tallied the game winning goal to lead the Falcons to a 3-2 win on Friday night against the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Ross Mauermann potted the first goal of the game on a rebound opportunity with 4:55 left in the first period. His third of the season was assisted by Eric Selleck and Dakota Mermis. Despite leading by a score of 1-0 after the first period of play, the Falcons were outshot 12-6. Niklas Treutle backstopped the Falcons to a scoreless first frame.

Mauermann once again found the back of the net to start the second period with a rebound goal, much like his first of the night. The rookie scored his fourth of the year and second of the night just 3:01 into the stanza. Justin Hache and Selleck assisted on the tally to put the Falcons ahead by a 2-0 score. Just 2:46 later, Hartford would bring the game within one as Chris McCarthy scored his second of the season. Mat Bodie and Josh Nicholls assisted on the goal. At 7:55, Nick Tarnasky tied the game at two with his ninth of the season that was assisted by Chad Nehring. The second period concluded with the teams deadlocked at two goals apiece. The Falcons outshot the Wolf Pack 14-9 in the period. Hartford netminder Jeff Malcolm stopped 13 of the Falcons chances in the second period.

The teams skated scoreless during most of the third period with missed chances on both sides. Eventually with 55.6 seconds left, Cunningham broke the tie to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead. Dustin Jeffrey led the forward with a pass for his ninth of the year. Christian Thomas began the rush finding Jeffrey at center ice. Hartford pulled Malcolm for the extra attacker in attempts to tie the game. The Falcons defense held strong and protected the 3-2 score for the victory. Treutle improved to 7-9-1 with 26 saves. Malcolm fell to 4-3-0 with 26 stops. Both teams had one power play opportunity but could not convert.

The Falcons return to the Nest tomorrow night for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Providence Bruins. The Teddy Bear Pools and Spas Chuck-a-Puck grand prize is at $3,400. In addition, one luck fan will win a free car wash for three years courtesy of Balise Columbus Ave. Car Wash. The weekend concludes with a 3:05 p.m. puck drop in Providence against the Bruins. Both games can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN.
