Monsters Shocked by Griffins in OT, 1-0

Cleveland Monsters News Release

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - In the ninth of 12 meetings between the two teams this season and in bizarre fashion, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters were defeated in overtime by the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday by a final score of 1-0. With the overtime loss, the Monsters are 19-13-3-3 overall this season and with a .579 points percentage, remain alone in fifth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.

After regulation slid by scoreless in a physical, tight-checking battle, overtime seemingly concluded devoid of a score as well, but, unbeknownst to fans and media, a video review was conducted prior to what would have been a three-round shootout. On second look, officials determined that a right-circle transition shot from Grand Rapids defenseman Nick Jensen at 2:08 of the extra session that appeared to strike the Monsters' right goal-post, in fact went through the net itself and was confirmed as a good goal and the deciding tally in a 1-0 Griffins win. Since there were no stoppages between Jensen's shot and the end of the overtime frame, the review was unable to be conducted until the conclusion of the period.

The win was Grand Rapids' 14th consecutive victory at Van Andel Arena, a Griffins franchise record. Jared Coreau notched his third shutout of the season in net for Grand Rapids by virtue of a 30-save performance, while Brad Thiessen stopped 38 of the 39 pucks he faced in net for the Monsters in his fifth consecutive start between the pipes for Lake Erie.
