ROSEMONT, Ill. - Goaltender Pheonix Copley rejected all 34 shots he faced and the Chicago Wolves scored three times in the third period to earn a 3-0 victory over the Iowa Wild on Friday night at Allstate Arena.
Center Pat Cannone and defenseman Andre Benoit, the Wolves' pair of American Hockey League All-Star selections, scored midway through the third period and right wing Eriah Hayes added an insurance tally to pace Chicago (17-16-1-2) to its third consecutive home win.
"We played a very, very sound game," said Wolves head coach John Anderson. "We were trying to go high on (Iowa goaltender Jeremy Smith). If you look at the notes I wrote on the wall, the first thing I said was you have to go high on him. Sure enough, the (first) two shots that went in were rockets right above him."
Cannone delivered the game's first goal at 8:44 of the third period. Riley Brace controlled the puck at the blue line, surged into the middle of the zone and spied Cannone flying down the right side. The Wolves captain lifted a shot over Smith's left shoulder for his ninth goal of the season.
Benoit followed up at 11:38 with a rising blast past Smith's glove. Brace battled for the puck along the right half-wall and sent a pass to the high slot for Cannone, who quickly moved it to Benoit above the left circle for an unchallenged slap shot.
Hayes gave the Wolves the 3-0 lead at 15:30 as he benefited from a perfect backhand centering pass from Yannick Veilleux. Zach Torquato launched a shot from the right circle that Veilleux chased behind the net and put on Hayes' stick just outside the slot.
Copley (9-10-1) picked up his third shutout of the season and the team's fourth. Smith (4-12-2) stopped 32 of 35 shots for Iowa (9-25-2-3).
The Wolves continue their run at Allstate Arena when they host the Lake Erie Monsters at 7 p.m. Saturday for Girl Scout Night. To connect with the best ticket specials, visit ChicagoWolves.com or call 1-800-THE-WOLVES.
