Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of the 13,599 fans, the team's largest home crowd of the season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Charlotte Checkers by a final score of 5-2 on Friday at Quicken Loans Arena in the final game of Lake Erie's 2015-16 regular-season. With the win, the Monsters capped the campaign at 43-22-6-5 overall this season and with a .638 points percentage, finished 2015-16 in second place in the Central Division, third place in the Western Conference and set new franchise records for regular-season points (97) and home victories (25).
Charlotte's Brock McGinn vaulted the Checkers to a 2-0 lead on Friday with back-to-back five-on-five goals, at 8:01 and 10:25 of the opening period, respectively. Lake Erie's Alex Broadhurst cut the Checkers' lead in half, however, at 15:40 of the frame, thanks to an even-strength goal, set up by Steve McCarthy and Dillon Heatherington.
The Monsters leveled the score at two apiece with the middle stanza's lone tally, an even-strength Mark Cundari blast at 11:41, assisted by T.J. Tynan and Oliver Bjorkstrand. In the third, Bjorkstrand netted what proved to be the game-winning score at 4:16 at even-strength thanks to feeds from Dean Kukan and Kerby Rychel before a Sonny Milano power-play goal at 12:24 and an empty-netter from Nick Moutrey at 16:32 capped the scoring at 5-2 Monsters.
Lake Erie net-minder Joonas Korpisalo improved to 8-8-2 in net for the Monsters this season by virtue of a 21-save performance while Daniel Altshuller made 23 stops in defeat for the Checkers.
Next up for the Monsters, it's round one of the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs with the team's full first-round playoff broadcast schedule and ticket information released in the near future.
