
10,561 Sees Wolves Edge Wild in Shootout Thriller

DES MOINES, IA- The Iowa Wild (24-40-5-6, 59 points) were defeated by the Chicago Wolves (32-35-5-3, 72 points) 3-2 in front 10,561 fans at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night. Wolves defenseman Andre Benoit scored in the sixth round of the shootout, helping Chicago grab the extra point. Forwards Bryce Gervais and Danny Kristo scored a goal each in the Wolves victory. Goalie Pheonix Copley (15-16-3) stopped 41 of 43 shots in the win. Iowa goalie Steve Michalek (7-5-2) made 24 saves on 26 shots in the defeat. Forwards Scott Sabourin and Zack Mitchell scored a goal each in the Wild loss. Mitchell's goal breaks the Iowa Wild franchise record for most goals in a season. The Wild finishes its season in Chicago on Saturday, Apr. 16.
Iowa forward Scott Sabourin opened the scoring at 13:33 of the first period, helping the Wild grab a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Hunter Warner picked up the assist and his first professional point on the play. Warner led an offensive rush up the ice, carrying the puck into the offensive zone. With a defender draped over his back the rookie fed a spin-o-rama pass to Sabourin at the front of the net. Sabourin one-timed the puck under the arm of goalie Pheonix Copley and into the net for his fourth goal of the season. Chicago center Bryce Gervais scored at 15:45 of the period, tying the game 1-1. Forwards Danny Kristo and Pat Cannone each tallied an assist on the power-play goal. Kristo controlled the puck to right of the goal, looking for a backdoor pass. He threw the puck to the front of the net and Gervais redirected it past goalie Steve Michalek for his fifth goal of the season.
Wild forward Zack Mitchell scored at 4:31of the second period, reclaiming a 2-1 Iowa lead. Defenseman Mike Reilly and forward Grayson Downing tallied an assist each on the power-play goal. Downing corralled the puck above the right faceoff circle, sliding a pass to Reilly. The defenseman fired a shot along the ice from the point. Standing in the high slot, Mitchell tipped the puck up and over the shoulder of Copley for his 22nd goal of the season. Mitchell's goal sets a new Iowa Wild franchise record for most goals in a season. Wolves forward Danny Kristo tied the game 2-2, scoring at 10:41 of the period. Forward Pat Cannone picked up the lone assist on the shorthanded goal. Cannone flipped the puck to Kristo in the neutral zone, springing him on a rush up ice. Kristo crossed the Iowa blueline and immediately snapped a shot on net, beating a screened Michalek over the glove for his 24th goal of the season.
After a scoreless third period and overtime Wolves defenseman Andre Benoit scored in the sixth round of the shootout, giving Chicago the 3-2 victory.
Iowa travels to Chicago for the final game of the season on Saturday, Apr. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
