Wilkes-Barre, Penn. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (46-17-5-5) scored three goals in the first period and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Lowell Lock Monsters (27-25-5-7) at the Wachovia Center on Saturday.

The Penguins jumped out to a 3-0 lead less than nine minutes into the game. Petr Taticek and Krys Kolanos scored power play goals and Maxime Talbot scored on a shorthanded breakaway to give the home team the cushion. The former Monster Kolanos has seven goals in 11 games with Wilkes-Barre since being assigned by Pittsburgh. Despite the deficit, Lowell outshot Wilkes-Barre/Scranton 7-5 in the first stanza.

In the second, Lowell used a pair of tallies in the span of less than a minute to change the game around. Ryan Steeves scored for the second straight game, on the man advantage at 7:56. Just 29 seconds later, Kevin Estrada notched his fourth of the season to cut the deficit to just one. Blue Bennefield assisted on both Lowell goals. Wilkes-Barre stormed back, however, and regained the multiple-goal lead with a power play goal by Matt Hussey at 10:49. Lowell trailed 4-2 after 40 minutes.

The third period was back and forth, with neither team getting very many scoring opportunities. But the power play again proved to be a difference-maker, with the clubs combining for eight power plays. Lowell went on a five-minute major power play late in the period after Hussey took a high sticking penalty. Johnny Boychuk's blast on the advantage at 14:07 beat G Dany Sabourin to make it 4-3 and give the Monsters hope. Lowell pulled Weiman for the extra attacker with just over a minute remaining, but the Penguins staved off the attack and held on for the win.
