HOUSTON, Texas - The American Hockey League's Houston Aeros have signed defenseman Chris Ovington to an amateur tryout, the team announced Saturday. Ovington, who played four seasons at the University of Alberta for Aeros head coach Rob Daum and won a second straight national title with the Bears last month, will wear jersey No. 2.

Ovington, 25 (8/15/80), totaled 105 points (29-76=105) in 202 games in five seasons at the University of Alberta. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound native of Vernon, B.C., was named Canada West's Top Defenseman in 2005-06 and was a CW First Team All-Star. Ovington was named to the University Cup All-Star Team as the Bears repeated as national champions. Ovington, named 2002-03 and 2003-04 Alberta Academic All-Canadian, played five junior seasons with WHL Red Deer, Saskatoon and Spokane before enrolling at University of Alberta. Ovington was Florida's eighth-round pick (No. 148 overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

The Aeros begin a five-game homestand tonight against Peoria at 7:35 p.m. It's Chad Hedrick Night, as the Aeros honor the Olympic Champion speedskater and Texas native, who is hosting a group of Special Olympians. The first 5,000 fans will receive a commemorative Aeros puck.
