BELLEVILLE, ON - The AHL's Cleveland Monsters defeated the Belleville Senators in a shootuot on Friday at CAA Arena in Belleville, ON by a final score of 2-1. With the win, the Monsters are now 24-21-5-1 overall this season and with 54 points, find themselves in sixth place in the AHL's North Division standings.
Cleveland grabbed a 1-0 lead at 3:28 of the opening period when Nikita Korostelev rifled home a power-play goal on feeds from Sam Vigneault and Tommy Cross. In the middle frame, Belleville's Christian Wolanin equalized for the Senators with an even-strength marker at 12:24 to level the score at one apiece heading into the final period of play.
After a scoreless third period and overtime frame, Cleveland's Mark Letestu and Korostelev scored in the first two rounds of a three-round shootout while Monsters goaltender Jean-Francois Berube stopped two of three Belleville shooters to seal a 2-1 Monsters win.
Berube stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced in regulation and overtime to improve to 16-15-4 this season while Belleville's Marcus Hogberg fell to 9-4-4 this year despite a 29-save performance.
