LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

At Syracuse (3/17): Despite outshooting their opponent 33-15, the Manchester Monarchs were held off the scoresheet for the second consecutive game, a 2-0 loss to the Syracuse Crunch at the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter on Wednesday night. Left wing Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman and right wing Chad Kolarik tallied the goals for the Crunch. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (26-19-5) stopped 13-of-15 shots for his 19th loss of the season. Crunch netminder Kevin Lalande (22-19-2) earned his 22nd win of the season and second shutout with 33 saves. Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Syracuse was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

Vs. Portland (3/19): The Manchester Monarchs snapped their four-game losing streak as they earned a point in the 4-3 shootout loss to the Portland Pirates at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night as the team celebrated going green and recycling. With the score deadlocked at three following a scoreless overtime, Portland left wing Mark Mancari potted a shootout goal that clinched the 4-3 victory for the Pirates. Pirates goaltender J-P Lamoureux stopped all four Monarchs shooters in the shootout, center Oscar Moller, center Justin Azevedo, left wing Bud Holloway and center Shawn Bates. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped center Paul Byron in the shootout but left wing Nathan Gerbe found the back of the net with Mancari. In regulation, defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov, left wing Dwight King and Holloway scored for the Monarchs while center Tyler Ennis, Byron and Mancari netted tallies for the Pirates. Bernier (26-19-6) stopped 25-of-28 shots on goal, recording his sixth shootout loss of the season. Lamoureux (11-8-2) earned his 11th victory of the season, halting 19-of-22 shots on goal. Manchester did not have a power play opportunity during the game. Portland was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

At Bridgeport (3/20): In just his seventh game since returning from an injury he suffered in November, right wing Trevor Lewis notched his first goal of the season to carry the Manchester Monarchs over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Along with Lewis' overtime goal, the Monarchs picked up tallies from center Juraj Mikus, center Justin Azevedo and defenseman Alec Martinez. The Sound Tigers responded with goals from left wing Greg Mauldin, center Mike Radja and right wing Tomas Marcinko. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (9-9-0) earned his ninth win of the season with 26 saves on 29 shots. Sound Tigers netminder Nathan Lawson (14-13-3) took his 13th loss of the season stopping 24-of-28 shots. Manchester went 1-for-2 on the power play. Bridgeport was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

At Portland (3/21): Right wing Mark Mancari spoiled goaltender Jonathan Bernier and center Marc-Andre Cliche's homecoming as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Portland Pirates, 2-1, at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, home of the Lewiston MAINEiacs, on Sunday evening. Center Oscar Moller scored the lone Monarchs goal with 6.5 seconds remaining in the game. Mancari was credited with both Pirates tallies. Bernier (26-20-6) took the loss with 19 saves on 21 shots. Pirates netminder Todd Ford (4-5-1) earned his fifth win of the season stopping 36-of-37 shots. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Portland was 2-for-6 with the man advantage.

NEWS & NOTES

The Manchester Monarchs (35-26-3-6) dropped to fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 79 points. The Worcester Sharks (43-21-2-3) lead the Atlantic Division with 91 points followed by the Portland Pirates (39-22-6-4) with 88 points and the Lowell Devils (35-26-4-6) with 80 points.

The Atlantic Division's top four teams are separated by 12 points.

The Monarchs are 20-11-1-3 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season.

Manchester is 2-6-1-1 in their last 10 games and has not won a game in regulation since Friday, March 5. The Monarchs tied the franchise record for consecutive games lost with four when they went 0-3-1-0 from March 7-17.

The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked sixth in the AHL. They have given up 45 goals in 293 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.

Their power play is ranked ninth in the league with 49 goals on 258 opportunities with the man advantage.

Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 50-of-70 games thus far this season.

The Monarchs are 18-1-1-1 when scoring the first goal on home ice.

Left wing Bud Holloway (18-25=43) leads the Monarchs in both assists (25) and points (43).

Holloway is tied for 12th in the AHL with five game-winning-goals this season.

Center Corey Elkins (19-21@) ranks second on Manchester's roster with 40 points.

Elkins leads the Monarchs with 19 tallies this season.

Center Gabe Gauthier (8-23=31) ranks second on the squad with 23 assists and sits in third place with 31 points.

Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (9-19=28) leads Monarchs blueliners and ranks fourth overall on the team with 28 points.

Voynov received his first fighting major of his pro career when he dropped the gloves with Portland's center Paul Byron on Friday, March 19.

Right wing Scott Parse (4-11=15), who was recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday, March 3, leads the team with a plus/minus rating of plus-11.

Defenseman Drew Bagnall (2-8=10) is close behind Parse with a plus-10, followed by right wing John Zeiler (7-8=15) with a plus-9.

Right wing Kevin Westgarth's career-high 24 points (11-13$) have moved him into sole possession of fifth place on the Monarchs roster.

Defenseman David Kolomatis has steadily moved up the scoresheet and is ranked sixth on the Monarchs roster with 23 points (6-17=23), followed closely behind by center Marc-Andre Cliche (11-11=22).

Cliche recorded his team leading third shorthanded goal of the season in the team's 4-0 blanking of the Providence Bruins on Saturday, February 20. His three shorthanded goals are also tied for seventh in the AHL.

Right wing Trevor Lewis (1-0=1) recorded his first point of the season, the game-winning overtime goal in Saturday's 4-3 win over Bridgeport. Lewis began the season with the Kings before being assigned to Manchester on October 30. Following just five games with the Monarchs, Lewis was injured when he was awkwardly checked into the boards and was sidelined until March 5.

Center Oscar Moller (10-12-22) recorded two assists in Saturday's 4-3 overtime win in Bridgeport, his first points in seven games since being assigned to Manchester on March 3. Moller also scored his first goal since returning to the Monarchs in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Portland.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 26-20-6 in 53 games of the season. His 26 wins are ranked fifth in the AHL.

Bernier's eight shutouts lead the AHL.

Bernier is ranked second in the league with a 2.09 goals-against-average and is ranked first with a.935 save percentage.

Netminder Jeff Zatkoff has played in 20 games for the Monarchs this season, recording a 9-9-0 record, a 2.82 goals-against-average, a.918 save percentage and two shutouts.
