LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Providence (1/7): The Manchester Monarchs earned their first overtime victory of the season with a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Center Gabe Gauthier tallied twice in regulation and right wing Trevor Lewis found the back of the net in overtime for the Monarchs. Bruins right wings Brad Marchand and Martins Karsums scored for Providence. Monarchs' goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (1-2-0) earned his first victory on the season after stopping 29 shots. Bruins' netminder Tuukka Rask (16-13-0) suffered his 13th loss of the season with 27 saves. Manchester went 2-for-4 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
At Norfolk (1/9): The Manchester Monarchs comeback came up one goal short as they fell to the Norfolk Admirals, 4-3, at the Norfolk Scope on Friday night. Right wing Trevor Lewis, left wing Matt Moulson and right wing Ryan Murphy scored three come from behind goals for the Monarchs. Center Bracken Kearns, center Zenon Konopka (2) and right wing Grant Potulny collected goals for the Admirals. Monarchs' netminder Jonathan Bernier (10-10-3) took his 10th loss of the season with 23 saves on 27 shots. Admirals' goaltender Mike McKenna (7-11-4) earned his seventh victory of the season stopping 26-of-29 shots. The teams battled with five fights in the game. Manchester collected 39 penalty minutes and Norfolk compiled 49 minutes. Manchester went 2-for-6 on the power play. Norfolk was also 2-for-6 with the man advantage.
At Norfolk (1/10): Right wing Steve Downie scored two goals and picked up an assist as the Norfolk Admirals sunk the Manchester Monarchs, 4-2, at the Norfolk Scope on Saturday night. Defenseman Andrew Campbell and center Justin Azevedo gave the Monarchs the early lead but center Bracken Kearns, Downie (2) and center Chris Gratton tallied for the come from behind victory for Norfolk. Monarchs' goaltender Jonathan Bernier (10-11-3) took his 11th loss of the season stopping 28-of-31 shots. Admirals' netminder Mike McKenna (8-11-4) earned his eighth victory of the season with 19 saves. Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Norfolk was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
Manchester (17-18-0-5) dropped to sixth place in the Atlantic Division with 39 points in 40 games. The Providence Bruins (23-15-2-1) lead the Atlantic Division with 49 points.
After winning four in a row, the Monarchs are 1-4-0-1 in their last six games.
The Monarchs are in 20th place in the AHL on the power play. The team is 30-for-192 with the man advantage for a 15.6-percent rating.
Manchester has stopped their opponent 169 times on 204 power play opportunities for an 82.8-percent rating this season, good for 15th place.
Manchester lost their first game in regulation on a Friday on the road in their 4-3 loss to the Norfolk Admirals on Friday, January 9. They are 3-1-0-1 away from the Verizon Wireless Arena on Fridays and 7-3-0-2 overall on their best day of the week.
The Monarchs are 3-10-0-0 on Saturday's this season.
When the Monarchs score first, they have gained a point in every game but two. Manchester is 13-2-0-4 in the 19 games where they have scored first.
Manchester is 11-1-0-3 when they have the lead following the first period. They are 12-1-0-2 when leading after two periods.
The Monarchs are undefeated when scoring four or more goals (8-0-0-0) and are 8-2-0-2 when tallying three goals in a game.
After going 2-4-0-1 in the month of October, the Monarchs went 7-4-0-2 in November and 7-6-0-1 in December. Manchester is 1-4-0-1 in the month of January.
Right wing Trevor Lewis (10-16=26) leads the Monarchs in points and goals. He was recalled by the Kings on December 18 and made his NHL debut against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, December 19 and scored his first NHL goal against the Detroit Red Wings on December 20. Lewis had three points (1-2=3), zero penalty minutes and a zero plus/minus rating in five games with the Kings this season. Lewis was reassigned to Manchester on Tuesday, December 30 and has collected seven points (2-5=7) in the seven games he's played in since his return.
Center Marty Murray (5-17=22) and center Gabe Gauthier (5-17=22) are tied for second place on the Monarchs in scoring and lead the team in assists.
Gauthier is ranked sixth on the Monarchs all-time assists list with 82 helpers over three seasons. He is also ranked 10th in goals scored with 42 and ranked eighth with 124 points.
Manchester's fourth leading scorer, reigning AHL Rookie of the Year right wing Teddy Purcell (9-10=19), is on recall with the Los Angeles Kings.
Purcell was recalled to the Kings on December 10. He still leads the Monarchs in goals with nine tallies on the season. He registered a goal and an assist in the Kings game against San Jose on December 15. In 14 games with the Kings this season, Purcell has seven points (1-6=7), two penalty minutes and a plus-1 plus/minus rating.
On Tuesday, Purcell was named to the Canadian AHL All-Star team. The 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications will be held at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, on January 25-26. Purcell participated in the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic and was named the MVP of the All-Star Game after he scored three goals in regulation and the game-winning shootout tally for Team Canada.
Left wing Scott Parse (8-8=16) has moved into fifth place on the Monarchs roster with 16 points. Parse's plus/minus rating of plus-6 leads the team.
Left wing Vladimir Dravecky (2-12=14) is tied for sixth place on the Monarchs squad with right wing David Meckler (8-6=14); both players have 14 points.
Meckler and Parse are tied for third on the Monarchs in goals scored with eight tallies.
Left wing Matt Moulson (5-8=13) ranks seventh on the Monarchs squad with 13 points. Skating in three games this week following a lower body injury that sidelined him since November 30, Moulson collected four points (1-3=4) in his current three-game scoring streak.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (4-8=12) leads Monarchs blueliners and is ranked eighth on the squad.
Voynov participated in the World Junior Championships as a member of Team Russia which won the bronze medal in the tournament. The rookie defenseman collected four points (1-3=4) in seven games.
Right wing Ryan Murphy has played in 15 games with the Monarchs this season and ranks second on the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-5. During the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, Murphy collected 24 points (12-12=24) and 67 penalty minutes in 102 games. Playing on the top line this season, Murphy has three goals and two assists for five points in his 12 games.
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (1-2-0) recorded his first AHL victory in the Monarchs 3-2 overtime against the Providence Bruins on Wednesday, January 7.
MONARCHS TRANSACTIONS
12-30-08: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) assigned right wing Trevor Lewis to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).
12-31-08: The Manchester Monarchs (AHL) released defenseman Eric Werner from his AHL contract.
12-31-08: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) recalled center Brian Boyle from the Manchester Monarchs.
1-6-09: The Manchester Monarchs (AHL) released center Tyler Mosienko from his professional tryout agreement.
1-6-09: The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) reassigned defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov from Team Russia at the World Junior Championships to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL).
