Sharks finish franchise record seven game home stand 5-2-0-0

Rewind the Tape:

1.9.09 - Worcester 4 - Albany 1 - DCU Center

The Sharks fired 42 shots and found the back of the net on four occasions and defeated the River Rats 4-1 Friday night at the DCU Center. Thomas Greiss was brilliant making 36 saves in goal for the Sharks. Andrew Desjardins, Lukas Kaspar, Matt Fonataro, and Riley Armstrong all scored for Worcester. Claude Lemieux was the Critter Control Pest of the Game and Frazer McLaren received his team leading 13th fighting major with a great bout in the 2nd period.

1.10.09 - Worcester 2 - Lowell 1 - DCU Center

The Sharks defeated the Devils for the 4th straight time this season after a late 3rd period goal by defenseman Brett Westgarth to end their franchise record long seven game home stand 5-2-0-0. Thomas Greiss picked up his third straight victory making 21 saves in net. T.J. Fox scored his 3rd of the season and Ryan Vesce extended his point streak to seven games (4-6-10) with an assist on Westgarth's game wining goal.

Sharks in the Atlantic...

The Sharks (21-17-0-1) swim in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division with 43 points, six points behind the first place Providence Bruins and two points behind the 2nd place Portland Pirates. Just four points separate 3rd place (Worcester) and 6th place (Manchester) in a very choppy Atlantic Division.

Shark Bites:

*Derek Joslin, currently on recall with the San Jose Sharks, was named as a starter for Team Canada for the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications.

*Sharks captain Ryan Vesce was named an AHL All-Star for the second time and will skate for Planet USA. Vesce was also named an All-Star his rookie season with the Springfield Falcons.

*Ryan Vesce is currently riding a seven game point streak (4-6-10) and has 26 points (11-15-26) in his last 22gp.

*Lukas Kaspar has 10 points in his last seven games (4-6-10).

*Cory Larose (3-4-7) is currently riding a five game point streak.

*Sharks defenseman Brett Westgarth scored his first goal of the season on Saturday, his first goal as a Shark in his 36th game. After recording just one assist in his first 31gp, Westgarth has three points in his last five games (1-2-3).

*Worcester leads the AHL with shots per game (36.08) and first in shots against per game (25.10)

*The Sharks have 45 fighting major penalties this season through 39 games this season. 12 different players have dropped the gloves already this season (Frazer McLaren (13), Westgarth (11), Staubitz (6), Moore (4), Demers (2), Andrew Desjardins (2), McGinn (2), Cavanagh, Dan DaSilva, Kyle McLaren, Brendan Buckley, and TJ Fox.

*Frazer McLaren is 3rd among AHL rookies with 13 fighting major penalties.

*Steven Zalewski ranks 3rd among AHL rookies with 105 shots on goal.

*Claude Lemieux has ten points (3-7-10) in 20 games along with 20 penalty minutes and is +4 since his return to professional hockey with the Sharks on 11.28.08.

*The Sharks are 11-1-0-0 when leading after the first period of play, but are the only team in the AHL not to have recorded a point when trailing after two periods (0-14-0-0).

Worcester to host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications!

The Sharks and the city of Worcester will host the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications on January 25th and 26th at the DCU Center. Tickets are on sale to the general public now. The 2009 event in Worcester will mark the fourth time since it was revived in 1995 that the AHL All-Star Classic will take place in New England. The AHL All-Star Classic was last held in Massachusetts in 1959 at the Eastern States Coliseum in West Springfield.

The Sharks hit the road for 13 of their next 15 games including six straight beginning Wednesday night in Philadelphia at 7:05p.m. The Sharks next home game is not until Friday, January 30th vs. the Springfield Falcons.
